My father, Manuel M. Silva 22 Bassett St, Lowell, MA died 5/25/1973.
Worked for Bedford VA Hospital 1938-1970 as a chef. I'm trying to get
his birthdate and if possible his SS#. Veteran of WWI

Hi kl0takl0ta,

I started doing some research also but wanted to check with you to see
if you have any additional information at all about your father, such
as any names of his brothers or sisters, parents, wife's name and her
maiden name etc. Do you happen to know 'where' he was born? Was
Lowell, MA where he died, or was it where he lived when he worked at
the hospital?  Do you know the name of the cemetery where he is
buried? Any clues  you can provide will help us find an answer for you
as soon as possible. I have located a few possibilities so far but
need a way to narrow them down.

Ancestry.com have a wonderful service known as the Social Security
Death Index.

A search for anyone called Manuel Silva who died in 1973 returns 18
results. Only one died in the month of May, and his Social Security
nunber was issued in MA.

Unfortunately he was too young to be a WW1 vet, so it's not your dad.

One thing you should know about public records searches:  the people
entering the data do not, in any substantive way, care about the
accuracy of what they have entered.  If you have a photo of him in a
ww1 uniform, than he may have not died in May.  If you are certain he
died in May, then it is possible that either a) you have the wrong war
or b) they entered the wrong birthdate.
