Question ID: 178430
I have 4 computers networked at my house and they all have the same
software and file stucture,...LOTS of very important files.

My desire would be that ALL of the computers hold the latest version
of
files (mostly user files) written on any of the computers.

I would like to do this without using a client/server model as my main
goal
is to safeguard against crashes/losses.

I am a a little bit paranoid about loosing data and cost is no
object...and often make disk image copies and carry the copies to safe
locations.

It is a fairly standart practice on unix or linux
network. It would be sufficient to have just
one computer running linux. Are you interested in such
a solution?

No I don't want to deal with linux as I want all conmputers to
be peers (i.e no client/servers) and each one runnign the same mirroring software

Hello francois777-ga,

I found some software packages that should "in theory" do exactly what
you are looking for, but after trying some of them myself, I could not
recommend them to you. Some common problems were error messages,
unreliable transfers and even one case where the file transferred was
corrupt, with a completely different file size.

The one that stood out the most to me is OpalisRendezVous
"OpalisRendezVous provides a flexible, real-time file replication
solution. It offers, inbound collection and outbound distribution of
files, folders and directories across the LAN, WAN or Internet."
http://www.opalis.com/products/opalisrendezvous/opalisrendezvous.html

It does look like a great product, but unfortunately does not support
Windows XP. Perhaps another researcher will be able to recommend a
product... based on my research so far many of the ones I tried were
not as great as they promised to be.

If nobody else tackles this question, I will try taking a fresh look
at it at a later date. I am going to give another researcher who might
have more experience with such software an opportunity answer first
though.

Hi
Try folderclone from http://folderclone.com/ It is what you are
looking for
"synchronization solution for Windows XP/2000/NT"

"FolderClone lets you make an identical copy of a folder tree from one
drive to another. It can be used to synchronize files between a
desktop computer and a laptop, or replicate data between a workstation
and a server. It can also be used to copy important files from your
hard drive to another location. (ZIP drive, CD-RW, removable hard
disk, network drives, local hard disk)"
