Question ID: 17851
Can anyone identify the following children's picture book based on the
information below?
(note: I'm trying to remember a book that I read as a child, so not
all details may be accurate)

It was a about a car that entered a big city (possibly New York City)
and became the "one too many car," resulting in traffic, gridlock,
chaos, etc. There was some sort of resolution at the end, but I can't
remember what happened. I remember the car as being something small
and cute, and possibly red (VW bug?).

Though unlikely, it's possible that it was not a seperate book, but a
short story or a chapter in another book. I need the title and author.

Thanks, Dan

Hi.
The book is the "The Ultimate Auto" by Patrick McGivern, and
illustrated by Susan Perl. It was published in 1969 by Putnam.
The Library of Congress Call Number is: PZ7.M1679 Ul
Here is the Library of Congress description: " Even as the mayor
worried about the day New York would be invaded by the Ultimate
Auto--the car that would finally jam traffic completely--that car was
approaching the city."

Alibris, a listing service for rare and out-of-print books, shows one
copy available for sale. Here is their description:
"Scarce story of a massive traffic jam in NYC all started by a
Kennelman in a little Volkswagon from upstate New York."

Thanks for posting this question. Your description was perfect, and I
was "chomping at the bit" to answer this one. Luckily, it opened up
again at 1:00PDT. Thanks again.
