Hello Roy,
Thank you for your question.
I assembled statistics and data on PDA sales 2002 and forecasts both
in unit sales and dollars. These numbers do not include PDA/phone
combos like the Handspring Trio.
I have also included the market share for the top PDA companies.
The PDA/phone combo data that I was able to locate is provided at the
end of my answer.

According to Cindy Wolf, an Analyst with In-Stat/MDR:
PDAs are forecasted to have a healthy 18.3% Compound Annual Growth
Rate (CAGR) over the 2002-2007 period, with the highest growth rate
anticipated for 2003.
In-Stat/MDR also found that:
The ability to access the Internet from a PDA is being increasingly
integrated into these devices. About 15% of PDAs offered this
functionality in 2002, and this percentage is expected to grow to 75%
by 2007.
A variety of products offering on-chip memory, improved power
consumption and support for greater functionality will become
available.
Wireless and communications functionalities will increase this year
on PDAs, especially on high-end devices.

Stat/MDR has found that:
The three major customer segments for PDAs are consumer, mobile
professionals, enterprise.
The global long-term market forecast for PDAs is solid, with annual
growth through 2005 in the double-digit range, peaking in about 2004
at 30%, and then tapering off in 2005 as the market matures.
The current OS leader among PDAs is clearly Palm followed by Pocket PC
and Windows CE hold.
This report estimates compound annual growth from 2001 through 2005 at
25%.

Dollar Values
According to Gartner the worldwide PDA market is forecast to grow 7.1
percent to $4.1 billion in 2002.
Although the PDA market will most likely reach $4.1 billion in 2002,
the opportunity can reasonably be expected to range from a
conservative $3.8 billion to an optimistic $4.3 billion.
The 2003 market is expected to see unit shipment growth of 20.2
percent, but the dollar value of those units should increase by only
7.0 percent over 2002 because of increased price competition and
falling ASPs.

Worldwide PDA sales topped 15M units in 2001 and are projected to
reach nearly 61M devices in 2008 for a compound annual growth rate of
26.5%. PDA unit sales will grow from 9% of PC sales in 2000 to nearly

Worldwide PDA Product Segments
The strong future growth of Phone-PDAs is based on recent success in
Europe, where Phone-PDAs have reached a market share of about 30% of
total PDA sales. The positive reaction and reviews of Handspring's
Treo is another reason for a growth forecast.
Worldwide PDA product mix is shown in the next figure. Unit sales are
in millions. Pen PDAs are the market leader with worldwide unit sales
of 12.2M in 2001 with growth projected to 31.3M devices in 2008.
Keyboard PDA unit sales reached 2.5M devices in 2001 and is
forecasted to grow to 10.3M units in 2008. Phone-PDAs will grew from
less than 0.3M units in 2000 to over 19M units in 2008. Cumulative
sales of pen PDAs reached nearly 30M units in 2001 and will top 177M
