How many paper-based planners (e.g. Franklin Planners, DayRunners, Day Timer planners, etc.) were sold last year, in terms of both dollars and number of units? What are the available forecasts for this year and future years? Tip for each of the following: - ($10) market share of each of the top five companies - ($10) any breakdown by U.S., Europe, Asia regions. I also welcome any feedback on whether you feel this question was fairly priced. Thanks! -Roy |

Hello iswhatis-ga, Ive watched several researchers lock and unlock this question. I also gave it a try and wasnt able to come up with anything that comes close to answering your question. It seems that paper planners and organizers have been superceded by electronic/software time management products. Heres the little bit of information I managed to find. Good luck with your research project. czh http://www.speakingsolutions.com/news/tablet1.html Remember the paper Franklin PlannerŪ? In just a few short years, handheld Palm PilotsŪ wiped these bulky paper planners from corporate boardrooms, student backpacks, and active soccer moms' purses. Over the five-year period that Palms, Handspring's , Pocket PCs, and other PDAs became vogue, a declining market for paper planners hurt the company. Over the same 5 years, Franklin/Covey's stock steadily declined from over $30.00 down to $2.35 (July 12, 2002). http://www.hoovers.com/co/industry/4/0,2662,15674,00.html Franklin Covey Co Sector: Consumer Products - Non-Durables > Industry: Consumer Products (Non-Durables) - Business Forms & Other Office Supplies Top Competitors Day Runner | Fortune Brands | Nightingale-Conant SIC Codes 2782 Blankbooks 8742 Management consulting services http://www.hoovers.com/industry/description/0,2205,3250,00.html Companies In This Industry Companies that manufacture and market general office supplies, including writing instruments, business forms and binders, paper clips, and other business machine accessories. |

iswhatis - Let me add the following numbers I have collected in anticipation of replying to your question - please note that paper planners are included with binders and folders in all of the reports I have seen - Sales for the 52 weeks ending 3/24/01 as reported by AC Nielsen: $570.4m, down 1% from previous 52 week period. This accounted for 325.4m units sold, and increase of 11.4% - which means prices continue to come down. The 55th Annual Consumer Expenditure Survey reports that every individual adult consumer in the US had spent $10.08 on planners, binders and folders in 2001. And, during 2001, approximately $44m worth of planners, binders and folders were sold through supermarkets. Hope that helps some. ragingacademic |
