I would like to know if the following composers are alive or dead and, if dead,
when (i.e. which year) they died:
- American composers Lillian FUCHS and Jerome KANNER (both born 1903)
- German composer Waldemar WOEHL )
- Hungarian composer Jenö TAKACS )(these 3 all born in 1902)
- Croatian composer Mihovil LOGAR )

You might consider expiring this question and reposting this as 5
separate questions at $10 each. That way, if a researcher finds the
information about one of the composers, it will be possible to supply
an answer.

Hi corelli,

According to the Biography and Geneaology Master Index and the New
Grove Encyclopedia of Music (2003), the only one of the five who is no
longer living is Lillian Fuchs, who died in Englewood, NJ, 6 Oct 1995.
It does look from tehuti's post below, however, that maybe these are
behind the times. I found some listings for Kanner in the BGMI and
would be happy to share them with you if you'd like.

My question for you: Will you accept an answer that Kanner, Woehl,
and Takacs are alive, Fuchs is definitely deceased, and that Logar is
probably dead?

I suppose it is possible that Kanner and Woehl are still alive, but I
need EXACT dates for each of the composers and so far it seems only
"tehuti-ga" has come up with useful information.

There is no answer at this time.

I couldn't find any databases with the answers.

This database of 3000+ composers fails to list any of them:
http://members.tripod.com/musiclassical/compcover.html

Another site that lists over 8,000 composers only mentions one,
Takacs, without a date of death:
http://composers-classical-music.com/t/TakacsJeno.htm

This site has Takacs dying in 1987
http://www.chaconne.com/TrioConBrio/TrioConBrio_rep_de.html

However this site has him getting awards since then - I don't know if
this is commonplace for deceased composers:

Fuchs died in 1995

I have found the approximate date of death for Lilian Fuchs --
specifically, two possible dates, within one day of each other. I
have also found information that Jenö Takacs was alive as of last
year. There seems to be very little information in general about
Jerome Kanner, while the death dates (if any) of the remaining two
composers seem elusive. That's my information so far.

Hello corelli,

Since I have only found information for four out of your five names, I
am posting this as a comment. However, I would be delighted if you
would consider this as a valid answer (btw I will be away until
Tuesday and unable to log into Google Answers)

Logar: The death of Mihovil Logar was announced in the Serbian
newspaper Nasa Borba on January 14, 1998

Takacs: The program of the Bad Aussee Music Festival for July 2003
features the music of Takacs. Reference is made to the fact that he
celebrated his 100th birthday on September 25, 2002.

Woehl: The Library of Congress Catalog entry to scores of music by

Fuchs: “Lillian Fuchs, one of the foremost violists and string

the age of 91”.

Despite searching on All the Web and Teoma, as well as Google, I could
not find any references to the life or music of Jerome Kanner. There
is one reference to a song recorded by Percy Faith in 1950, “Christmas
in my heart”, which was co-written by a J. Kanner with R. Madison and
J. Bresler. settlet.fateback.com/COL39000.htm

I'd like to note that Takacs did not die in 1987, as he published his
memoirs "Errinerungen, Erlebnisse, Begegnungen" in 1990. This
according to the Grove Encyclopedia article, which was written by his
biographer, Wolfgang Suppan.
