I am looking for a book that I read when I was in elementary school,
in about 1968. It was in the school library, and was not new. It may
have been published in the 1950's. The book is about a young boy who
goes west with a group of cowboys on a bison hunting expedition.
Hundreds of bison are shot and their furs removed, and the
carcasses are left laying on the plains. It was the boys job to cut
the tongue out of several of the carcasses, because that was the only
part of the bison that the cowboys would eat. During the entire
trip, the boy never took a bath. There may have been several similar
titles by the same author, but I am not sure. I seem to remember
reading more than one book with a similar wild west theme at about the
same time, but I may be mistaken. For some reason, this book stands
out in my mind, and I have thought of it many times during the years,
and would dearly love to identify it so I can search for it on eBay.
Unfortunately, I don't remember the title or author. If anyone can
help me with a title, author, or both, I'd really appreciate it! |

Thanks to both of you for your suggestions. However, I don't think
Buffalo Boy is the correct title. It has an Indian boy riding a horse
on the cover and is part of the Our Native American series, so I think
it is about an Indian boy's experiences. I doubt that The Lone Hunt
is the correct title, since it is about "the last buffalo killed in
the state of Tennessee", rather than a trip out west where hundreds of
buffalo are killed. Links to both books are below. I do plan to get
copies of both books asap, as it is possible that one of them could be
the right title, and if so, I will contact the correct person
immediately. I would appreciate further suggestions as well. Thanks
again.
