Is it possible to rename a printer in Windows XP that is a remote
printer. For example, I have software that is specifically looking
for a printer with a name like InkJetPrinter, and since it is a shared
printer (on another computer) XP automatically names it InkJetPrinter
on Server1. I need to remove the on Server1 part. Please do NOT
suggest that I use an IP address since XP is smart enough to change it
to PrinterName on ServerName automatically even if I use an IP
address. I have also read that renaming the printer will stop it from
working. I want a solution that works. Thanks,

Hi mnbytes-ga,
It appears that the only way you can do what you want, is by
installing a printer driver locally(on your Win XP computer) for the
Remote Printer. Once you do this, you will be able to access the
remote printer through your local driver, and will be able to rename
it at will.
For step by step instructions for installing a local printer driver
for a remote printer, please see the following Microsoft Knowledge
Base Article :
     - Install a Printer Driver Locally for a Remote Printer in
Windows XP
Note that you need to have Administrator permissions to install the
printer driver as specified above.

Try it out and post the results here. If it works satisfactorily, I
will post this as an answer.

If you need any clarifications, just ask!
