Question ID: 179413
Could you find some peer-reviewed articles (example: Pediatric
journals) no more than 5 years old on this topic that talks about the
condition, incidence, prevalence, treatment options, and expected
prognosis?

Hi there Shotie,

If you could clarify a couple of points, it would make our job as
researchers easier ;-)

1. How many articles are you looking for; 5? 10? More?
2. Also, most journals charge a subscription fee to view their
articles. Abstracts can sometimes but not always be found on line.
Are you looking for full text articles or abstracts, or would the
title and journal edition, date, volume, etc. be sufficient for you so
you could look them up at a library?

Thanks!

Dear Kutsavi-ga, Thanks for getting back to me. If you are unable to
find full-text peer-reviewed medical/pediatric articles, listing the
details (title, author(s), vol., journal, page no., and mo/year would
be greatly appreciated. They cannot be more than 5 years old. I do
not have a minimum or maximum number of references that I have to have
as long as it contains the facts I asked in my first request.

Thank You, Shotie

Hi Shotie48,

I did a cursory search of the PubMed MEDLINE database for the
following search and found approximately 300 results: ((((("purpura,
thrombocytopenic, idiopathic"[MeSH Terms] OR Idiopathic
thrombocytopenia purpura[Text Word]) AND hasabstract[text]) AND
(("infant"[MeSH Terms] OR "child"[MeSH Terms]) OR "adolescent"[MeSH
Terms])) AND (("human"[MeSH Terms] OR "hominidae"[MeSH Terms]) OR
"Human"[MeSH Terms])) AND ("1997"[PDat] : "2003"[PDat])).

Basically, it's using these ideas:
idiopathic thrombocytopenia purpurea
in children (infant, child, adolescent)
in humans (as opposed to animal studies)
in articles with abstracts (a good indication, usually, of peer
reviewal)
published in the years 1997 to 2003

I'm thinking that 300 will be too many for you, but I'm not sure how
to narrow down the search further given the information you've
supplied. If you'd like, I can try to give you a direct link to these
results (it can be tricky to construct it correctly for PubMed). If
that would satisfy your search, please let me know.

I want to warn you, as Kutsavi did above, that very few of these will
be available on the Internet for free. However, they all have
citation information and abstracts which you should fee free to
browse.

Thanks for your guidance!

I should add that the database allows searching on the following
subheadings:

blood
chemically induced
classification
complications
congenital
diagnosis
diet therapy
drug therapy
economics
embryology
enzymology
epidemiology
ethnology
etiology
genetics
history
immunology
metabolism
microbiology
mortality
nursing
parasitology
pathology
physiopathology
prevention and control
psychology
radiography
radionuclide imaging
radiotherapy
surgery
therapy
ultrasonography
veterinary
virology

If you'd like to pick out one or more of these to include in the
search (for example, "incidence" and "prevalence" aren't good options
- but "epidemiology" might be close) I can try to narrow the results
down using these subheading terms.

Hi Shotie48,

Sorry for all of the clarifications, you've piqued my interest...

I looked in PubMedCentral, which is a free, online repository of
peer-reviewed journals in medicine and health, and found the following
four articles for you:

Pharmacokinetics of Cefepime during Continuous Renal Replacement
Therapy in
Critically Ill Patients.
Malone RS, Fish DN, Abraham E, Teitelbaum I.
Antimicrob Agents Chemother. 2001 Nov; 45(11): 3148-3155.
PMCID: 90796
[PubLink]

Longitudinal Analysis of Lymphocyte Function and Numbers in the First
Year
of Life in Chromosome 22q11.2 Deletion Syndrome (DiGeorge
Syndrome/Velocardiofacial Syndrome).
Sullivan KE, McDonald-McGinn D, Driscoll DA, Emanuel BS, Zackai EH,
Jawad AF.
Clin Diagn Lab Immunol. 1999 Nov; 6(6): 906-911.
PMCID: 95796
[PubLink]

Recent Advances in Determining the Pathogenesis of Canine Monocytic
Ehrlichiosis.
Harrus S, Waner T, Bark H, Jongejan F, Cornelissen AW.
J Clin Microbiol. 1999 Sep; 37(9): 2745-2749.
PMCID: 85367
[PubLink]

Pharmacokinetics of Levofloxacin and Ciprofloxacin during Continuous
Renal
Replacement Therapy in Critically Ill Patients.
Malone RS, Fish DN, Abraham E, Teitelbaum I.
Antimicrob Agents Chemother. 2001 Oct; 45(10): 2949-2954.
PMCID: 90762
[PubLink]

To get to these, go to the PMC database:
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?CMD=Text&DB=pmc and
enter "idiopathic thrombocytopenia purpura" in the search box. You
will get five responses, one of which is from 1995 so I didn't list it
above (you can weed that out if you click on "LIMITS" and enter the
years you want under publication date). To get to the full-text,
click on the word "PubLink" and you will see them.

Does this answer your question? If you'd like the link to the
non-full-text articles as well I'd be happy to supply that. Otherwise
I'll put these results and my search strategy in as an answer with
your permission.

Hi Shotie48,

I have found a number of articles in PubMed MEDLINE that I think you
will find useful for your research. I am putting the citation
information and the direct link into the PubMed MEDLINE abstract
information for each article.

This was my search statement in PubMedMEDLINE:
(((((((((((((((((((((("Purpura, Thrombocytopenic,
Idiopathic/complications"[MESH] OR "Purpura, Thrombocytopenic,
Idiopathic/congenital"[MESH]) OR "Purpura, Thrombocytopenic,
Idiopathic/diagnosis"[MESH]) OR "Purpura, Thrombocytopenic,
Idiopathic/diet therapy"[MESH]) OR "Purpura, Thrombocytopenic,
Idiopathic/drug therapy"[MESH]) OR "Purpura, Thrombocytopenic,
Idiopathic/epidemiology"[MESH]) OR "Purpura, Thrombocytopenic,
Idiopathic/etiology"[MESH]) OR "Purpura, Thrombocytopenic,
Idiopathic/genetics"[MESH]) OR "Purpura, Thrombocytopenic,
Idiopathic/microbiology"[MESH]) OR "Purpura, Thrombocytopenic,
Idiopathic/mortality"[MESH]) OR "Purpura, Thrombocytopenic,
Idiopathic/nursing"[MESH]) OR "Purpura, Thrombocytopenic,
Idiopathic/pathology"[MESH]) OR "Purpura, Thrombocytopenic,
Idiopathic/physiopathology"[MESH]) OR "Purpura, Thrombocytopenic,
Idiopathic/prevention and control"[MESH]) OR "Purpura,
Thrombocytopenic, Idiopathic/radiotherapy"[MESH]) OR "Purpura,
Thrombocytopenic, Idiopathic/surgery"[MESH]) OR "Purpura,
Thrombocytopenic, Idiopathic/therapy"[MESH]) OR "Purpura,
Thrombocytopenic, Idiopathic/ultrasonography"[MESH]) AND Review[ptyp])
AND English[Lang]) AND (("infant"[MeSH Terms] OR "child"[MeSH Terms])
OR "adolescent"[MeSH Terms])) AND (("human"[MeSH Terms] OR
"hominidae"[MeSH Terms]) OR "Human"[MeSH Terms])) AND ("1997"[PDat] :
"2003"[PDat]))

I searched for the MeSH term "Purpura, Thrombocytopenic, Idiopathic"
according to certain subheadings. I limited it to pediatric cases in
humans, written in English from 1997 to 2003 (approx. 5 years). In
addition, I limited the results to review articles. These are
peer-reviewed articles that usually have a broader scope than
individual clinical trials. This search returned 55 articles. I'm
giving you 45 of the 55, because some of them appear to be less
relevant than others - but I'm happy to get you more if you need them!

Hello shotie,

A Medline search on idiopathic thrombocytopenia purpura, limited to
human subjects aged 0-18 years, gave only one reference to a clinical
trial which is relevant to the time frame you specify as well as
referring to pediatric patients.

Ugeskr Laeger 1998 Mar 9;160(11):1640-4

methylprednisolone pulse therapy in children with newly diagnosed
idiopathic thrombocytic purpura. The Danish ITP Study Group]

Apart from this, only two earlier studies were retrieved, but both
were about the management of maternal thrombocytic purpura in
pregnancy.
