I'm running a seminar at MIT (Boston) for 14-20 people and I need to
find affordable housing for our group from April 18-26, 2003 (starting
on the night of April 18 and leaving on the morning of April 26). My
conditions are that housing needs to be under $1000, less than 30
minutes from MIT (in the Boston area) and be able to house 14-20
people with sleeping bags. Showers and bathroom would also be nice.
An answer will be considered acceptable if it results in us having a
place in Boston. Lodging that is a little over $1000 might also be
considered. Thank you for your assistance. |

amuzulo-ga,
Have you checked with MIT's conference services office to see if there
are dorm rooms available for you during that time? MIT's fraternity
and sorority houses are also looking for some lodgers (to help defray
some of their costs). The Conference Service office phone number is
(617) 253-1700.
Campus housing office (for dorms) - contact Bailey Hewit-Morey at
(617) 253-1530.
Either office should be able to give you information about on campus
housing availability.
One other thing - if you're running a seminar within a particular
department, check with the department head to see if there are any
special arrangements the department has.
MIT has special rates at area hotels and the department might be able
to secure you that rate. Two that might work for you:

The holiday inn rooms are two-room suites which would probably house
at most 6 per room.
To house your entire party in a hotel would be over your $1000 limit,
so my strongest recommendation is to try for the dorm room
availability. If this works for you, let me know in a clarification
and I will post this as an answer.

amuzulo-ga,
Have you been able to contact the people I listed below about on campus housing?

We tried contacting the people that you listed and they said that
dorms are not possible this time of year and that hotels are too
expensive. We have tried the YMCA before, but they're not allowing
groups to stay there in sleeping bags anymore. Do you have any other
ideas?

OK. Fair enough - the campus housing was probably your best bet for
that price range (the hope was that they would have enough free dorms
to fit you in in several smaller groups, but they must be working at
full capacity - there must be other campus events taking place that
same week that have already eaten up the slack).
It is unlikely that any of the other local colleges and universities
would be able to help (as their student to dorm ratio is far higher -
with far less chances of availability). And based on the time of year
there is no reasonably priced lodging that I can think of (beyond the
YMCA which you have already ruled out). And I'm not about to suggest
Wompatuck state park or the Boston harbor islands (partly because they
don't open fully until May and I'm sure that camping wasn't what you
mean by "affordable housing... with sleeping bags" :)
I'll throw the question back to the general researcher community to
see if anybody else wants to chime in with a more positive suggestion.
In the mean time, apologies that I couldn't help you more with this
question - if I have any other suggestions I will post them here
Regards and good luck
