Hi qpet:
Thanks again for the great question.

Many authorities define "spiritual emergency" as it relates to what is
called "spiritual emergence". The first definition I have for you puts
this relationship simply (and I think, very understandably):
TRANSPERSONAL PSYCHOTHERAPY AND SPIRITUAL EMERGENCY
URL: http://clem.mscd.edu/~davisj/tp/therapy7.html
Quote:
"DEFINITIONS
* Spiritual emergence The process of moving to transpersonal levels of
development or becoming aware of and integrating transpersonal
experiences.
* Spiritual emergency Crisis related to sudden spiritual emergence. It
may have either positive or negative outcomes."
A MUCH more detailed, technical definition of this term and its
diagnosis can be found at:
Spiritual Emergencies - Introduction
http://www.virtualcs.com/se/dxtx/intro.html
Quote: "Spiritual emergencies are crises during which the process of
growth and change becomes chaotic and overwhelming. In such episodes,
individuals often suddenly and dramatically enter into new realms of
mystical and spiritual experience. However, they may also become
fearful and confused and have difficulty coping with their daily
lives, jobs and relationships The term Spiritual Emergency was first
used by Stan and Christina Grof at the founding of the Spiritual
Emergency Network in 1978."

This site also does a great job of breaking out the various forms of
spiritual emergency:
Types of Spiritual Emergency
URL: http://www.virtualcs.com/se/dxtx/typesofse.html
Quote: "The number of types of spiritual emergency has grown from the
original 8 that Stan and Christina described in the ealry 1980s to
some 30 types in the literature today. Obviously there is considerable
overlapping terminilogy, and despite the human desire for order,
nature does not usually divide phenomena into neat categories."
Many sites seem to equate spritual emergency with a form of psychosis.
Quote: "What is spiritual emergency? In recent years there has been
some discussion of Spiritual Emergency. Stanislav Grof in his books
has developed the view that some forms of radical awareness, at times
precipating life crises, are spiritual crises rather than pathologies.
We must support such experiences rather than pathologize. Actually,
the concept of spiritual emergency has been around for thousands of
years in many, if not most cultures. Shamans, mystics, and spiritual
explorers have regularly experienced the same states of awareness as
have modern "crazy folk". Joseph Campbell speaks of these sorts of
radical awarenesses in his mythological work.

Spiritual Emergency is an alternative way of looking at certain states
of what psychiatry terms as psychosis. This way of looking at the
experience offers positive and beneficial perspectives rather than
stigmatization and pathological categorization. Some of the same
states experienced in extreme "psychosis" are the same states sought
after by spiritual seekers in other times and places."
