Question ID: 180880
what are the expected products in a base hydrolysis reaction of the
heterocyclic amine "lactam"?

Clarification of Question by devildogs-ga on 27 Mar 2003 10:39 PST
I' particularly interested in knowing if hydrolysis of lactam opens
the lactam ring, and does the process produce an acid and an amide as
other amide reactions do?

Base Hydrolysis of a lactam will yield tha salt of the acid and the
amine.

The only real difference between that and normal amides is that there
will usuall only be one reaction product, so entropically it may not
be as favoured as normal
