Is there an online resource where I can research if somebody has
already registered a trademark that I may want to use for a company
name?

There are a number of online resources where you can search if
somebody has already registered a trademark.


The United States Patent and Trademark Office 
(On the left side of the page choose “SEARCH trademarks (TESS)”
http://www.uspto.gov/main/trademarks.htm


Trademark & Name Databases by State 
http://statetm.tripod.com/databases.htm


EU Trade Mark Consultation Service
http://oami.eu.int/search/trademark/la/en_tm_search.cfm


UK Trademark Search
http://www.patent.gov.uk/tm/dbase/index.htm


Canada Trademark Search

Keep in mind that, even if the trademark is "available", there
are several things that might get in the way of you getting the
trademark you desire, including, but not limited to:

- prior use and registration with a state of a tradename or DBA
- use of that intended  trademark in business, such as through
a website name, etc.

Please be aware that an online search of trademark and copyright
registrations is NOT considered definitive, and will not serve as an
acceptable defense in a lawsuit for copyright/trademark infringement.
Therefore, to be truly protected, you will want to have an experienced
copyright/trademark law attorney perform a due diligence search for
you.
