I need information on the number of homeless families nationwide, and
specifically in NYC, in 1975, 1985, 1990 and now. (The years are
approximations, I just need stats from around those times, or the
overall trends between 1975 and now.)Since the homeless population is
difficult to measure, there may be many different estimates--that's
fine, just give me whatever differing estimations you find. Evidence
from: studies and censuses; government, non-profit and academic
estimates; and even just anecdotal evidence noting trends between
these dates, would be good. I will add a tip for the more information
that is given and the faster it is given. Thanks.

Homelessness became visible in the late 1970’s when the homeless began
sleeping on the streets. It is difficult to estimate how many were
homeless at that time as there were few shelters providing assistance
and it seems that no-one was bothering to count the number of
homeless. Modern Mass Homelessness in New York City traces the history
of homelessness from 1979.
