Question ID: 181702
I would like up-to-date information on the global suncare market (ie.
sunscreen, sunless tan, after-sun products such as Coppertone etc)....
I would like to know who the major brands are (say the top 5), who
they are owned by, and what their market share is (broken down by
geographical area). I would like to know the overall size of the
global market in $, and how this is divided amongst the big players.
I know that AC Nielsen holds this type of information, but I do not
have an account. I know that Beiersdorf is a big player with its'
Nivea Sun brand, but I am not sure who else on a global scale. Can
you please help? Kind regards, Scott

Dear scottyboy,

Thanks for your question. First, let me request that if any of the
following is unclear or if you require any further research – please
don’t hesitate to ask me for a clarification.

You requested –

+ up-to-date information on the global suncare market (ie.
sunscreen, sunless tan, after-sun products such as Coppertone etc)....
+ major brands (say the top 5)
+ who major brands are owned by
+ major brand market share (broken down by geographical area).
+ overall size of the global market in $
+ how global market is divided amongst the big players.

Well, here goes –

Global Suncare Market – Current Trends and Size
--------------------------------------------------------------

Euromonitor has published global suncare market forecasts for the next
several years, and they are as follows:

SUN CARE FORECAST US$MN - $1.18 billion in 2003, $1.2 billion in 2004
and $1.24 billion in 2005. Breakdown is approximately 73% “sun
protection,” 2% “Aftersun” and 25% “Self-tanning.”

Source: Soap & Cosmetics, 78 (3): 20(6), May 2002

Commentary on suncare market from “Global Cosmetic Industry” –

“Sun-care delivery systems have been modernized to make application
more effective and to attract customers unaccustomed to skin-care
regimens, particularly children and men. Current delivery systems and
formula refinements include foams and spray-ons; waterproof,
sweatproof, or sport-utility sunscreens; formulated-for-face
sunscreens and self-tanners; instant and variable SPF sunscreens; and
instant-effect or color-control self-tanning products. This is
definitely not a category in which prestige brands have much say, as
the leading brand of this segment, Estee Lauder's Clinique, represents
less than 2 percent of the total share of the category in the U.S.”
Also, some trend data –

·	Manufacturers concentrating on new products with higher SPFs,
delivery convenience and appeal
·	Also, novelty value for children, e.g. Coppertone KIDS Colorblock
Disappearing Colored Sunblock Spray
·	In moisturizing after-sun products aloe is often the featured
ingredient.
·	Neutrogena (Johnson & Johnson) introduced new oil-free products.
·	Schering-Plough plans to launch several new self-tanning products
this year.

From Euromonitor Market Direction we have the following data – latest
made public seems to be 1999 – this is for “Sun Care” -

U.S. 1,000.
Germany 318.5
U.K. 279.7
Italy 209.8
France 201.1
Japan 173.6
Spain 100.5

Major Brands
-----------------

Major brands based on US sales at mass market for the 52 weeks ending
2/24/02 – (annual sales in millions, annual volume in units)

1. Banana Boat $52.6m 8.2m
2. Neutrogena 45.5m 5.3m
3. Coppertone 45.1m 5.3m
4. Hawaiian Tropic 27.0m 3.7m
5. Coppertone Sport 22.4m 2.5m
6. Coppertone Water Babies 18.0m 2.2m
7. Coppertone Endless Summer 17.9m 1.6m
8. Banana Boat Sport 14.5m 2.1m
9. Coppertone Kids 7.7m 0.9m
10. Neutrogena Healthy Defense 7.5m 0.9m

Since, as in most other industries, US sales account for about 50% of
global sales, this is a very good proxy for the strongest brands
worldwide. Ranking by brand would be as follows: Coppertone
($111.1m), Bannana Boat ($67.1m), Neutrogena ($53m) and Hawaiian
Tropic ($27m).

Dear RagingAcademic!
Firstly, thankyou for the info you have provided, it is definately a
step in the right direction for me.
I do need some clarification/elaboration:

------
1. With the 'SUN CARE FORECAST', I was hoping to get a breakdown of
the forecasted value i.e. of the $1.18 billion, what brands have the
major share of the market and how are these ranked?
e.g.

Market = $1.18 billion

1 Beiersdorf (Nivea Sun) = $320M
2 Schering Plough (Coppertone) = $220M
etc etc

------

2. the resources which you used, are they open to the public? If so
can you point me in the right direction so that I can read into the
figures further?

------

3. The Euromonitor Market Direction - what do these values represent?

------

4. '... this is a very good proxy for the strongest brands worldwide.'
I debate this as the US market appears to be very different from the
other markets as a whole e.g. US does not market Nivea Sun.
I think this is a little misleading and need harder figures for the
global market.

------

5. NEW ZEALAND figures
these figures are very out-of-date now as NZ Cancer Society now has
50% of the market

------

thankyou for the information, if you could provide the further
information that would be much appreciated! I would be most content if
I could get the info as explained in number 1. above.

Many thanks, and kind regards
Scott

Dear scottyboy,

Here is my follow-up to your clarification request.

First off, all of the data I had included in the first round is from
private sources and is not available online – however, you have the
references and could likely retrieve the entire text of the relevant
articles from your local library.

Here is additional information on global market share.

The best source of information I have uncovered is the following
report – “The World Market for Skincare and Suncare” – it was
published in 2000, and it contains oodles and oodles of data. See in
.pdf format at –

www.biz-lib.com/info/2348.pdf

(I’d download a copy right away, it looks like one of those things
that are available on the ‘Net by mistake…)

Another good source of data is the following report, which includes
European market share as follows:

Beiersdorf Nivea Sun 19.1
L’Oreal Ambre Solaire 15.9
Sara Lee Delial 6.0
Private label 4.5
Boots Soltan 4.3
Johnson & Johnson Piz Buin 4.1
Cadey Italiana Bilboa 2.4
L’Oreal Lancome 1.9
Clarins 1.9
Gelen Cosmetics Lemonoil 1.3
L’Oreal Vichy 1.1
Johnson & Johnson RoC 1.1
Lots more data available at –

http://www.in-cosmetics.com/page.cfm/Link=55

An article by Nancy O’Connor, “Sun Rise, Sun Set, Sun Sales,” provides
additional information on the global market for suncare, estimating it
at $2 billion annually (vs. the previous estimates which were in the
neighborhood of $1.2b).

Article includes market share for major brands in the following
countries: France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain. Looks like very good
information, on the whole –

http://www.ecrm-epps.com/Expose/V3_1/V3_1_A28.asp

Marketresearch.com has some interesting reports that are likely to
include all of the data you are seeking, but they come at quite a
cost, ranging from $3000 to $5000. For example –

Skin Care Products – Global Industry Analysis (March 2002)
International Suncare Products Market (May 1996 – last time this was
done)

See http://www.marketresearch.com/

Some other interesting information I ran across

Listing of most US suncare brands

Clarification to Other Questions Asked
________________________________

+ Euromonitor data – they claim these are numbers for total annual
sales in dollars, seems a bit high and may include some other lotions
etc. but there is no additional detail available.

+ As far as US market share being a proxy for worldwide – looking at
the data I now have, you’re right, my assumption on this end was bad.
Sorry.

+ NZ numbers – I only find the data, I don’t collect it and I
definitely can’t guarantee it. I guess you should double check with
local sources in NZ if this is critical to you.

I hope this response adequately addresses your request. Please let me
know if you are in need of additional information concerning this
query.

Thanks,
ragingacademic-ga

Hi again Ragingacademic!
Thanks loads for your clarifications - this really is very helpful!
Regarding the pdf: www.biz-lib.com/info/2348.pdf that you recommend I
download... it appears to be a 21page table of contents, with a couple
of sample pages included. Is this what you found, or have they
switched versions before I got there? If switched, do you have the
full version I could have?

Please let me know, and thanks again for your help!

Scottyboy -

Thanks for your feedback and the tip, it's much appreciated.

As far as the document goes, i did not have a chance to download it -
did not think it would disappear so quickly. I'm glad the rest of the
info addressed your needs relatively well.

thanks again,
