Question ID: 18176
I want to find out why my domain name is not resolving to the correct
IP address. The domain name is jitit.com and it is supposed to
resovle to :
209.217.54.147

When I query Network Solution's whois using their web interface, it
tells me the primary and secondary domain servers are:
   CRACK.COM                    209.217.54.147
   NS1.CATALOG.COM              209.217.1.2

When I query these servers using "dig", the both tell me the correct
IP address for jitit.com.

However most (but not all) DNS lookups from external source on the net
resolve to 205.158.42.155, an old IP address I used to have for
jitit.com. For an example you can see this NSLOOKUP Cgi script:

http://cc-www.uia.ac.be/cgi-bin/nslookup-query?hostname=jitit.com

I changed my Network Solution domain record some time ago to reflect
my new primary and secondary name servers (at least a month ago), and
since then I've made no changes.

At crack.com, I am running the my own named (bind) which is supposed
to be serving jitit.com and a few other little domains I own. If it
is any use in solving this problem, here are what my config files look
like:

/etc/named.conf:
-------------------
zone "jitit.com" IN {
        type master;
        notify no;
        file "jitit.com";
};

/var/named/jitit.com
--------------------

$TTL    86400
@                       1D IN SOA       jitit.com. root.jitit.com. (
                                        2001101602      ; serial (d.
adams)
                                        3H              ; refresh
                                        15M             ; retry
                                        1D              ; expiry
                                        1D )            ; minimum

                        1D IN NS        crack.com.
                        1D IN NS        ns1.catalog.com.
                        1D IN NS        ns2.catalog.com.
                        1D IN A         209.217.54.147
                        1D IN MX        10 209.217.54.147.

jitit.com.             A 209.217.54.147
www                     A 209.217.54.147
ns1                     A 209.217.54.147
shroud1                 A 62.190.172.153
----

finally, an odd but probably useful clue is that www.jitit.com
resolves to the correct IP, while jitit.com does not. What is going
on? I've reset my name server serveral times using
/etc/sysconfig/named restart One other clue is that I upgraded named
a year or two ago when the bind volunerability was discovered. I
don't know what version I currently run, but "strings" shows the
string "9.1.0" in there.

Jonathan,

The address resolves properly for me, and my WHOIS query at the
NETWORKSOLUTIONS site produces the correct resolution:

http://www.netsol.com/cgi-bin/whois/whois?STRING=jitit.com&SearchType=do

   Record expires on 13-Dec-2002.
   Record created on 13-Dec-1998.
   Database last updated on 26-May-2002 13:29:16 EDT.

   Domain servers in listed order:

   CRACK.COM                    209.217.54.147
   NS1.CATALOG.COM              209.217.1.2

However, as tpr-ga points out, you have both Domain and Nameserver
records for JITIT:

http://www.internic.com/cgi/whois?whois_nic=jitit.com&type=domain

Domain Name: JITIT.COM
   Registrar: NETWORK SOLUTIONS, INC.
   Whois Server: whois.networksolutions.com
   Referral URL: http://www.networksolutions.com
   Name Server: NS1.CATALOG.COM
   Name Server: CRACK.COM
   Updated Date: 06-apr-2002

http://www.internic.com/cgi/whois?whois_nic=jitit.com&type=nameserver

Server Name: JITIT.COM
   IP Address: 205.158.42.155
   Registrar: NETWORK SOLUTIONS, INC.
   Whois Server: whois.networksolutions.com
   Referral URL: http://www.networksolutions.com

The Nameserver registration is where the bad IP address is coming
from. Network Solutions has been slowly migrating their computer
systems for several months now, and many records are split across
their servers. I have domains I can login and manage with the online
forms, and domains I have to use the old e-mail system to manage. When
things go wrong, I find the best thing is to get them on the phone at:

1-800-742-1710 or 1-800-779-1710

The last resort complaint resolution mechanism is for domain related
issues is ICANN

http://www.internic.com/cgi/registrars/problem-report.cgi

but they really deal with registrar performance rather than individual
problems.

I hope you found this helpful.

The problem is at Network Solutions. It looks like you have a host
record for JITIT.COM. Change it and you will be golden.

   Server Name: JITIT.COM (tpr host record)
   IP Address: 205.158.42.155
   Registrar: NETWORK SOLUTIONS, INC.
   Whois Server: whois.networksolutions.com
   Referral URL: http://www.networksolutions.com

   Domain Name: JITIT.COM (tpr domain record)
   Registrar: NETWORK SOLUTIONS, INC.
   Whois Server: whois.networksolutions.com
   Referral URL: http://www.networksolutions.com
   Name Server: NS1.CATALOG.COM
   Name Server: CRACK.COM

jonathanclark,

I had this same problem setting up my domain. What happens when you
tell your site the DNS servers it says ok and everything. But you try
to access your site by typing your domain name and it doesnt come up;
that is because of your ISP. What your ISP does is just like a phone
book(ISP) does, it has to get your name (domain) then your number(your
IP), then it updates its records. This usally takes about 24-48 hours
depending on what type on ISP you have. AOL took two days, MSN took 1
day for me; I didnt try any others though.

I hope that is what your looking for,
SysAdmin
