Where can I find good and free information on how to set up an Apache
Server (ver. 2 for windows) on my own home network (except on Apaches
own web pages). I am first of all looking for a step-for-step guide
where both basic setup and more advanced features (especially security
issues) are covered.

Most of the guides I have read in doing a quick scan of what is out
there caution against using Apache with Windows for a secure public
site. Have you considered using a pre-configured Apache/PHP/MySQL
installer?

I will let others find a tutorial, since I could not find one that
addressed Windows Security issues.

Howdy olsolva-ga,

Complete step-by-step instructions (with screenshots)
for installing the Apache 2.0 server software on Windows
(as short as it is...) is at Brian Sweeting's IT Weblog:

http://it.sweeting.net/archives/tutorials/install_apache_2x_on_windows.html

The Flash-dB website has nice step-by-steps for the
install of Apache 2.0 web server, PHP 4.2.0, MySQL 3.23,
and PHPMyAdmin at:

http://www.flash-db.com/ApachePHPSQL/

Amazon has the "all" of Chapter 3 (Installing and Building
Apache) of "Sams Teach Yourself Apache 2 in 24 Hours" at:

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0672323559/002-0693636-0164850#product-details

Just scroll down to "Look Inside This Book" and click on
the "See all pages" link there. Click on the page marked
"Excerpt 9" to read it. The entire section dealing with
the Windows install of Apache 2.0 is only 3 1/2 pages.

Apache World has a website for the above book, with some
SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) information, etc. at:

http://www.apacheworld.org/ty24/site.home.html

If you decide that you need to buy a book, there is (in
addition to "Sams Teach Yourself Apache 2 in 24 Hours"):

Apache Server 2.0 A Beginner's Guide
Author(s): Kate Wrightson
ISBN: 007219183X
DOI: 10.1036/007219183X
Format: Softcover, 50 illus. , 560 pages.
Pub date: September 5, 2001
Copyright: 2001
$39.99 US
Product Line: McGraw-Hill Osborne Media

The above covers installation and security issues.

Although it is for Linux installs of Apache 2.0, there is
the Open Network Architecture Inc. (OpenNA) article:

How to Build, Install, Secure & Optimize Apache 2.x

Written by Gerhard Mourani and corrected by Colin Henry

http://www.openna.com/documentations/articles/apache/index.php

Even though it is for Apache 1.3, Thickbook.com has a
nice Apache (and PHP) tutorial at:

http://www.thickbook.com/extra/php_apachephp4_win.phtml

Again, Apache 1.3, but a good article concerning securing
dynamic web content by Tom Syroid is on the CGISecurity
website (i PDF format) at:

http://www.cgisecurity.org/lib/s-wssec.pdf

If you need it, you can get the Adobe Acrobat free software
to read PDF (Adobe Portable Document Format) files at:

http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html

Just in case you need it as a future reference (even though
you have already seen it...) as it is referred to in the
various articles above, here is the link to the Apache
Organization's page for Windows/Apache 2.0:

http://httpd.apache.org/docs-2.0/platform/windows.html

As snapanswer-ga indicates, there is scant information that
specifically address securing Apache 2.x on Windows.

If there is anything else I can do to help/clarify my Comment,
feel free to ask.

Looking Forward, denco-ga
