I need a list of at least five non-food retail websites in Malta.
They must be B2C sites (so not Ebay, not clasifieds, not shopping
comparison sites, although the latter can lead you to appropriate
sites). They must TRANSACT ONLINE (ie not a site that shows products
but doesnt let you buy). The top sites may be foreign (Amazon is the
best example) but I dont just want a list of US sites.

- Comments. A one or two sentence salient summary of relevant points
about the retailer (more than the site). This is also
a good place to say why this is a leading site and to highlight online
revenues and/or number of online customers for the retailers if
available at all.

2. I also need a list of leading FOOD retail websites (again
they must sell grocery online). Same as above.

If as you are searching, you come across any additional data on size
of online shopping in the country, online population, etc, please post
as additional URLs with no need for explanation.

Thank you

Hello webuserid-ga,

I’ve been able to collect both general retail and food retail online
shopping sites for Malta. I’ve also included a selection of
portals/directories and general articles about the business climate
and online demographics to help you understand the current status of
e-commerce in Malta. I was surprised that some of the “usual suspects”
are not big players in the Maltese online shopping scene. For example,
there are very few computer and electronics vendors or bookstores.

It seems that online shopping is in very early stage development in
Malta and many of the stores that offer this service are members of
shopping services offered by the major Maltese portals/directories.
I’m sorry that I wasn’t able to evaluate or size the revenues or
traffic volume for any of the sites I found. I think this would
probably be available only with expensive market research reports.

I hope that the information I’ve collected will give you a good start
for this section of your project.

MALTA E-COMMERCE BACKGROUND INFORMATION
=======================================

http://www.lowtax.net/lowtax/html/jmaecom.html
Malta e-commerce
The Malta Communications Authority announced in March, 2002, that it
intends to act as a catalyst for e-commerce rather than a regulator in
the initial period of development. Although e-commerce - together with
telecommunications and the country's postal service - is one of the
statutory areas under the competence of the MCA, the Authority has
revealed that during the developmental stages of the sector, its job
will principally be to bring together the main players, provide advice
and assistance, and explain the implications of new legislation as and
when it is implemented.

The most active e-commerce sector in Malta has been betting and
gaming; there are said to be 15 betting and gaming e-commerce
operations in total on the island.

***** This is an excellent article about the e-commerce climate and
current trends in Malta. The additional links from this page provide a
very comprehensive view of doing business in Malta.

http://www.lowtax.net/lowtax/html/jmacfir.html#population
Population, Language and Culture
In 2000 the total population of the islands was around 381,600. The
official languages are Maltese and English; Italian is also widely
spoken.
Malta is one of the ten countries due to join the EU in May, 2004, and
will be the first of those countries to hold a referendum on joining,
set for 8th March, 2003.

From "eEurope" to "eMalta": are we on track?
The European Commission has launched an initiative entitled "eEurope -
An Information Society for All", which proposes ambitious targets to
bring the benefits of the Information Society within reach of all
Europeans. The initiative focuses on ten priority areas, from
education to transport and from healthcare to the disabled. The
initiative is a key element in the President's strategy to modernise
the European economy.
The European Commission is aware of the weakness and the strength of
the EU-member states in the filed of Information and Communications
technologies. It is aware that it must overcome the handicaps that are
holding back the rapid uptake of digital technologies:
--generally expensive, insecure and slow access to the Internet and
e-commerce
--an insufficiently digitally literate on-line population
--lack of a sufficiently dynamic, entrepreneurial, service-oriented
culture
--a public sector which is no playing a sufficiently active role in
enabling the development of new applications and services

Malta -- Usage Patterns

National Statistics Office (National Statistics Office), in 2001,
25.4% of the population in Malta was online. This represented an
increase of 12.1% from 2000. (Nua Internet Surveys at Nua, August
