I am looking for a recommendation on a blender to bring to work to mix
up shakes. Being that this is a typical office environment I need
something that won't disturb my coworkers. I have a regular $25
Hamilton Beach one at home that would be way too loud.

Requirements:
1) Super Quiet
2) It is for making shakes with ice and water.
3) Would be nice if it were the one piece types that are easier to
clean.
4) Looks are unimportant
5) Order online for less than $100

Hello nuwanda-ga,

According to ConsumerGuide, the Cuisinart SmartStick Extendable Shaft
Hand Blender CSB-55 should meet your needs. It has a "powerful, but
surprisingly quiet, motor" that "speeds through" a variety of tasks.
It is one-piece, and "dishwasher safe". Its MSRP is $90.00; you can
find it for less on many sites. (Note: The current version is a
CSB-55N, though many sites still advertise the CSB-55.)

"Searched for 'csb-55'" [As suggested above, you might also search for
"csb 55n"]

I hope that this informtion is helpful.

hmm.

Since I'm new to Google Answers, I'm not sure how to handle this:

I don't think I was clear, when I said one-piece I meant a regular
type blendar, but that the glass & blade was all attached. Maybe I'm
wrong, but I don't know if the smartstick type thing would crush the
ice good enough.

So... you answered the question great, but I wasn't clear in my
original question. Maybe I should just re-ask the question so you can
get credit for two answers.

Thanks very much,
-Corey

Clarification of Answer by justaskscott-ga on 28 Mar 2003 14:16 PST
It's up to you how you prefer to handle it. I suppose that "one
piece" is ambiguous. On the other hand, you did ask for a blender for
making shakes with "ice and water"; the review and product description
do not specifically mention ice. The review does note that this
product "also comes with a Mini-Prep Chopper Grinder attachment and
reversible metal chopping blade that can be used to chop hard foods
such as coffee beans or nuts". Perhaps that, along with the
"powerful" motor, indicates that it can chop ice (at least when mixed
with water).

So perhaps you will want to purchase this product (especially from a
seller with a good return policy). Or perhaps you will want to post a
new question. If you think that I should do the research for the
current question, you are within your rights to request it. (Some
people might ask for any and clarifications without hesitation; I
appreciate the fact that you notified me of the possibility first.)

In general, hand blenders cannot be used for ice. Perhaps there are
some models that can, but unless it states specifically "safe for use
with ice" you should be wary of purchasing it.

I don't know what alex_p-ga's source is, but if he is correct, that is
a relevant consideration.
