Breakdown of Registered Domains
A Cyveillance Study - 2003
Prepared by: Brian H. Murray and Christopher Seline
Cyveillance, Inc.

There are approximately 40 million registered domains. This includes
all generic top level domains (gTLDs) and country code domains
(ccTLDs).

“This Cyveillance study of registered domains found that country code
top level domains (ccTLDs) are utilized at similar levels to generic
top level domains (gTLDs.) While .com, .net, and .biz continue to have
the highest percentage of live sites among their registration base,
the aggregate percentage for ccTLDs is a respectable 39 percent. Among
the live ccTLDs, 4.4 percent are equipped to process e-Commerce
transactions, a higher percentage than gTLDs such as .net, .org, and
.info.”

“The study found that there are now more than 19.4 million "live"
registered domains on the Internet. Approximately 2.5 million of the
live domains contain more than 50 pages of content, and 1.2 million
are equipped to process e- Commerce transactions. The study was
conducted using Cyveillance's patented technology to crawl and extract
e-Business intelligence from more than 40 million registered domains.”

According to an article at Evrsoft.com:
Total domains registered worldwide 30,674,408 (assuming .com, .edu,
.net, .org & .co.uk only)
http://developers.evrsoft.com/articles/ref_web_stats.shtml

Contractor Resource Inc. states:
There are currently more than 36 million domain names registered
worldwide. Of these 36 million names, more than 22 million end in
“.com”.

Forecast 2003:

“With 16 million domain names registered today, at an estimated
average registration fee of $25/year, the market size today is $400
million (measured by cost of name registration). International Data
Corporation (IDC) has estimated that by 2003 there will be
approximately 150 million worldwide registrations. Assuming that the
value of an average name is just $500, and then the market will be $75
billion in size by 2003.”

60,000 TOP LEVEL DOMAINS ARE REGISTERED EACH DAY

According to Advanced Website Solution close to 60,000 top level
domains are registered each day and nearly 97% of the words in
Webster's Dictionary have been registered.

ZOOCNIC reports:

“Zooknic (www.zooknic.com) reports that the total number of .com, .net
and .org domain names grew by 128,874 in July 2002. This marks the
first full calendar month of growth in total number of domain
registrations since September 2001. During the last quarter of 2001
and the first two quarters of 2002 the total number of .com, .net and
.org registrations shrank by 3.6 million from a high of 30.7 Million
in October 2001.”
http://www.zooknic.com/pr_2002_08_05.html

*****************************************************************************

From a NUA article dated Jan 25 2002:

“The total number of registered domain names grew by only 2 percent
last year, after more than tripling in 2000, and more than doubling in
1999.

This is according to VeriSign, which says there were 28.8 million
domain names registered at the end of last year, up slightly from 28.2
million at the end of 2000.

There were 10.8 million new domains registered in 2001. The total
number registered did hit a peak of 32.4 million in June 2001, but
fell as the number of new registrations failed to keep pace with the
number that expired and were not renewed.

This failure to renew domain names was attributed to speculators who
now realize that domain names are unlikely to have a high resale
value.”

All names for the .com, .org, .edu, and .net top level domains are
registered with the InterNIC (InterNetwork Information Center). The
InterNIC installs all domain information into the DNS (domain name
system) root server every day, so it controls all names deriving from
those root servers.

Paying for the domain name:

“The InterNIC charges $100 for each domain name registered. This
reserves the name for two years. After that, it charges $50 per year
to renew the registration. Of this money, 70% is kept by NSI to pay
for operation costs, and 30% is spent on the "intellectual
infrastructure of the Internet."

“WorldNIC charges $110 for its basic service, and $149 for the
additional services. Internic Software charges $250 for its service.”

Hi Bobbie7,

Thanks for the info- interesting even some of it was a bit out of date
(esp. the ave $ cost of registration)

One question though- I dont understand the hosts numbers quoted in the
ISC: http://www.isc.org/ds/WWW-200301/dist-byname.html

What does hosts mean there- does it count the number of active IP
addresses- which is why it is several times the total number of
domains in the world b/c people have IP addresses but not web pages?

Namezzz-ga,

I did more research and located additional information about the
average cost for registering a domain name.

According to InterNic:

“Each registrar sets the price it charges for registering names, and
prices vary significantly among different registrars. In addition,
some registrars offer discounted or free registration services in
connection with other offerings, such as web hosting.”
http://www.internic.net/faqs/domain-names.html

“The three most common TLD's (.com, .net. & .org) cost $70 for the
first 2 years, and then renew at $35 per year.”
Source: Domain Name Advisor FAQ
http://www.domainnameadvisor.com/faq.htm#faq10

“Registering a domain name is fairly simple. You can register at
Internet retailers called "registrars." There are approximately 150
registrars worldwide that have pricing models and service offerings
that differ widely. The average cost is approximately US$35 per year
per domain name, but the range is generally from US$8 up to US$50 per
year.”
http://www.girlgeeks.org/business/busart0203.shtml

Information regarding the hosts numbers quoted in the ISC count can be
found in the Internet Domain Survey Background where they explain how
they obtain the numbers in the survey.

A short excerpt:

“With the new survey we are now publishing five figures per top-level
domain (on our distribution by t-l-d charts). For each t-l-d, we show
the total number of hosts found (which equals the number of PTR
records found), the number of duplicate host names found (which
usually indicate a host with many addresses), and then we subtract the
duplicate count to arrive at the final host count.

We also publish two new numbers, a count of hosts under the 2nd and
3rd level domain names for each t-l-d. These counts will have
different meanings depending on how the particular t-l-d is organized.
For example, for the .COM domain, the number of 2nd level names equals
the number of hosts in organizations using names registered under
.COM, and the number of 3rd level names is, possibly, meaningless.
However, some t-l-d's like .UK and .AU, have a few fixed subdomains at
the 2nd-level (like .CO.UK) and so the 3rd level count shows the
number of hosts within the organizations at the 3rd level.”
http://www.isc.org/ds/new-survey.html

I hope this helps and anything else is not clear please ask and I'll
be happy to be of further assistance.

Best Regards,
Bobbie7-ga
