Hi,

A friend of mine wants to work in a medical lab a Medical
Technologist/Medical Lab Technician/Clinical lab Technologist
in the state of California. He has biology background and
tons of lab experience (as far as I know -not- in a medical lab).
I have heard that he has to have a State of California Clinial
Technologist license of some kind for that. Is that true?
In general, what does he do in order to acquire that license?
I would like details such as:
1. How long does it take to get the license?
2. What are the requirements?
3. Does he have to take a test?
4. Does he have to pay?
5. Finally, does he need any 'training' besides what he already
has as a scientist?

Please ask if anything is not clear. I would love
a thorough answer.

Thank you.

Hi yesdi,

In order to give you accurate answers to your questions, it would be
helpful to know what degrees and/or certificates your friend holds,
or, what kind of training he has had. Thanks, hummer

Thanks for your response. My friend is a PhD (Biochemistry) and is
currently working as post doc in a lab. Does that help?

Thank again!

Hi yesdi,

Yes, California requires Medical Laboratory Technologists to be
licensed. The usual requirement for an entry-level position as a
medical or clinical laboratory technologist is usually a bachelor's
degree with a major in medical technology or in one of the life
sciences.

Bachelor's degree programs in medical technology include courses in
chemistry, biological sciences, microbiology, mathematics, statistics,
and specialized courses devoted to knowledge and skills used in the
clinical laboratory. Many programs also offer or require courses in
management, business, and computer applications. The Clinical
Laboratory Improvement Act (CLIA) requires technologists who perform
certain highly complex tests to have at least an associate's degree.

It sounds as though your friend meets the following requirement:
Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Technology that includes one
year of
approved training in a clinical lab.

Therefore, I would suggest that he get in touch with the California
Department of Health Services: Division of Laboratory Science
Laboratory Field Services, which is the department in charge of
licensing. Your friend should call the LFS (contact number following)
to confirm that he meets all of the education requirements, but from
what you have said, it sounds good. They will also be able to tell him
the current examination schedule.

There is also a National Certification issued by the Board of Registry
of the American Society for the Clinical Pathology. Again, your friend
needs to contact the ASCP Board of Registry to find out if he meets
their academic and laboratory education requirements.

National Certification:
To be sure that laboratory workers are competent and able to perform
high quality laboratory tests, the Board of Registry of the American
Society for Clinical Pathology gives a national certification exam.
Students take this exam after meeting their academic and laboratory
education requirements. Those who pass the exam in medical technology
may use the initials, MT(ASCP), after their name to show they are
proficient in their field."
