Hello,

I'm looking for a GSM modem to build a prototype of an SMS application
thingy to send and receive SMSs through.

I want to find something I can get my hands on economically and some
other suggestions for commercial/corporate use.

Help! :-)

lizardnation...

I'm not confident that the results I found qualify as 'economical'.
Please review the options available on this page at Real Time Devices,

RF Solutions does not post their prices on their site,
but contact information for pricing, etc., is on this page:
http://www.rfsolutions.co.uk/ordering_information/ordering_information.htm

On their datasheets page, there is a 'DS058' pdf file listed for a
GSM Modem Maxon MM6854. Reading the pdf file, it notes these features:
· COMPLETE GSM MODEM
· HANDLES VOICE / DATA / SMS / FAX
· DUAL BAND 900 / 1800 MHz GSM TRANSMISSION
· ACCEPTS STANDARD SIM CARD
· CAN BE USED ON STANDARD GSM NETWORK
· RS232 INTERFACE
· USES STANDARD AT COMMANDS
· SUPPORTS CLASS 1 FAX COMMANDS
· DATA TRANSMISSION UP TO 14400 BAUD
· 10 MINUTE BATTERY BACKUP

The MM6854 is not highlighted on the RF Solutions website,
but might be worth an inquiry.

The datasheet page is here:

and the pdf file for the MM6854 is here:

Wavecom also offers the M1200 series 'FASTRACK' GSM/GPRS
Class 2 modems:
- M1203A: GSM 900/1800 GPRS Class 2
- M1213A: GMS 900/1900 GPRS Class 2
http://www.wavecom.com/products/m1200_gsm_gprs.php

...which this page, on ihub.com says will accept a SIM card:
http://www.ihub.com/GSM%20Modems.htm

I couldn't find any pricing on the Wavecom website, but their
distributor in the USA is AIRDESK. I couldn't find any pricing
on the AIRDESK site, either, but here's their Wavecom page:
http://www.airdesk.net/wireless_modems.asp?ChannelID=&Style=Styles%2Fairdesk%2Ecss&mscsid=&PublicShopper=&SiteName=AIRDESK&Category=150&ParentCat_ID=101

I notice there's a login almost everywhere on AIRDESK, so
maybe when you sign in you are privy to things like pricing.

That should give you enough options for comparative pricing.

Hello Denco,

Are these normal modems with the ability to connect to a cellular
phone via a cable or can you insert a SIM card directly into them?

I need the ones which are GSM modems that only work with GSM and
accept SIM cards. :-)

Thank for the help!

Howdy Lizardnation!

Those are normal modems that I listed. Apologies
on them not being the ones you need. I will check
further, but at first glance, GSM modems that will
accept a SIM are not as prevalent as the other ones.

This is just a note to acknowledge your clarification that the
devices I located are suitable as an answer. I will post a
formal answer this afternoon, when I will have time to expand
it a bit.
