Hello valtery,

"In 1938 German researchers had great success using hydrogen peroxide
in dealing with colds and the flu. Their data has been ignored
(maybe surpressed) for over 60 years."

Am pretty sure this question comes from "Trivial Pursuit", hydrogen
peroxide has already been guessed and deemed to be the wrong answer to
the question. Think the answer is a specific type drug.

Hello valtery,

After searching for an extensive amount of time I have not really come
closer to finding a different definitive drug. You mentioned that this
was probably a Trivial Pursuit question... do you know from what
edition of Trivial Pursuit this is? I do believe the answers are given
with the game and perhaps I can track down an answer for you that way.
Any other information you can give me about how and where you came
across this question would be useful in helping me find the answer.

I am in a MSN chat group that deals in the "Lord of the Rings". The
webmaster posts these questions which members must answer to advance
in the game. I do not know for sure if this question is in fact from
"Trivial Pursuit", however, the webmaster claimed he was going to use
some questions from the game. Thank you very much for your assistance
thus far.

Hello valtery,

Would you mind posting the website where this question is being asked?
If I see the question exactly as it was worded it might help me get
closer to an answer. Also some of the other previous questions might
prove to be useful in finding where the question came from.

I will continue to research this for you and get back as soon as
something new comes up.

Hello valtery,

I have been told that the question is a trivia question from Trivial
Pursuit Genus 5 and that the answer is: "LSD".

"LSD is lysergic acid diethylamide" and was discovered in 1938
according to this page:
http://www.intheknowzone.com/halluc/what_lsd.htm

I found an article that talks about experimentation on British
Soldiers for the purpose of curing the common cold (or so they were
told), but this was in 1953:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/drugs/Story/0,2763,666966,00.html

Searches such as lysergic acid diethylamide 1938 "common cold" on
Google:

...turn up nothing too convincing, so this is probably a wrong answer
in the Trivia Pursuit game.

If I come up with more information for you valtery, I will be sure to
notify you ASAP. All the best,

tisme-ga

Thank you very much for all that you have done...I entered your answer
"LSD" & a strange thing happened. Webmaster wrote back in answer to
my reply but did not say if answer was correct or not (which has never
happened), just asked me if I knew someone named "Alvin"....Is your
name Alvin????

Hello Valtery,

I can confirm that I emailed the webmaster asking for the answer and
also asked where the question/answer was from... and any references
linking to it. There was a reply with the answer, but I was unable to
support it with any references on the internet (which is why I think
it might be an error in the game).

I hope this does not get you into trouble in the trivia game... I was
not really expecting an answer, but was more interested in finding out
where the answer could be obtained. I also didn't think the answer
would have been sent if there was going to be any problems. All the
best,

tisme-ga

Your answer explains a lot....No, I am not really in trouble, let's
just say the teasing has been rather ruthless & there does not seem to
be an end in sight (sigh). Thank you again for all the time and effort
you put into answering the question...I really do appreciate it...

valtery,

It is well known that various editions of Trivial Pursuit contained
erroneous "correct" Answers. If the webmaster is using TP as a source,
they may very well have chosen one of those Questions.

Challenge the webmaster to find a corroborating source on the Internet
of what they say the correct Answer should be.

Sites that are merely collections of various pieces of trivia DON'T
count as a valid source -- many of those have just copied false trivia
over and over again. I'm guessing that they won't be able to find one,
unless it is a copy of that question from Trivial Pursuit posted by
someone on their web page. (see
http://answers.google.com/answers/main?cmd=threadview&id=174912 ).

Regards,

aceresearcher
