Hello oldmariner, 

This answer is certainly not definate but I am just letting you know
that I was unable to find an inexpensive way to extract magnesium from
milk of magnesia. Perhaps another researcher will be able to assist
you better.

You might be able to repeat Davey's process where he electrolysed
magnesia with HgO.
