Hello.

About 5,000 BMW Z8s have been manufactured.

Source: Cyberpresse.ca, January 13, 2002
"À travers la planète, quelque 5000 BMW Z8 auront été distribuées."
http://www.cyberpresse.ca/reseau/automobile/0301/aut_103010182494.html
Translation from the French:
"Across the world, some 5000 BMW Z8s will have been distributed."

The 5,000 figure would seem to be about right. 4,679 BMW Z8s had
been sold worldwide through the end of 2002. Regular Z8 production has
reportedly ended. Another 555 "Alpina" model Z8s are being built this
spring.

Here are the reported Z8 sales from BMW's annual reports:

2000: 1,371
2001: 2,202
2002: 1,106

Total: 4,679

"The BMW Z8 super-sportscar hand-built by specialist craftsmen at the
Munich plant and resting on an aluminum spaceframe body from the
Dingolfing plant was delivered to exactly 1,371 customers in the year
under report."

"The super sports car BMW Z8, hand built at the Munich plant, with an
aluminum spaceframe from the Dingolfing plant, was delivered to 2,202
customers in the year."
2001 BMW Annual Report, page 14.

"During 2002, 1,106 BMW Z8 cars, hand-finished at the BMW plant in
Munich, were delivered to customers."
2002 BMW Annual Report, page 15.

From Car and Driver, February 2003:
"... the supply of Z8s comes to an end this spring. (Production of the
regular Z8 for the U.S. market ended last November.) So the Alpina
roadster becomes the final run of Z8s. Only 555 of the Alpinas will be
built for worldwide consumption."

Additional source:
The Taipei Times reported worldwide sales of 4,242 Z8s, as of July
2002:
"BMW won't say how many Z8s it will produce; 1,600 have been sold in
the United States, out of 4,242 worldwide, since the car went on sale
here two years ago."

search strategy:
bmw group, annual reports
bmw, "how many z8s"
bmw, z8s, "will be built", worldwide

I hope this helps.

According to a message on the BMW Central messageboard, BMW won't
release information about Z8 color distributions.

A knowledgeable dealer could probably give you an estimate, though.
Good luck.
