how can i get company phone numbers?

i have the company name, city & zip code and am looking for a website
that can provide me the address and phone number.

Sorry - i guess that i should have been more specific.  i have a
database of about 950 companies that i need to get this information
on.

ideally if we (you) could find a website that can accept the
information that i have and post the result, i could create an
automated task that could pass each company name, get the result, and
then either save or print the result and move onto the next company
name.

Hi mhepp,

I have found a web site that gives you a company's address and phone
number after you have entered its name and zip code.  But you can only
enter one name and zip code at a time.  Also, I cannot guarantee that
this web site has all 950 companies that you are seeking.

Could you please answer the following questions:

1) Can your automation software launch a web browser with a specific
URL?

2) Can your automation software make selections on drop-down lists,
enter values into fields, and click on submit buttons?

3) Would you be able to manipulate the company names in your
automation software?  For example, would you be able to convert "XYZ
Corp" into "XYZ+Corp"?

2)Yes - we can select from a drop down list, enter values into fields,

3) Yes - we can manipulate company names to add quotes, "+", and any
other text that might need to accompany it.

Thank you for your clarification.  As I said in my first Request for
Question Clarification, I do not know if the web site I have found has
the addresses/phone numbers for all 950 of the companies in your
database.  Would you be satisfied with a web site if it did not have
the addresses/phone numbers for all 950 companies?

Would it be possible for you to post a few (or even all) of the
company names and zip codes, so that I can at least verify that the
web site has addresses and phone numbers for those?

Hi mhepp,

Thank you for posting some of the company names.

Most of the yellow pages web sites get their address and phone number
data from a certain company.  I did manage to find another yellow
pages web site that gets its data from a different source, so I was
able to query two different web sites to obtain the addresses and
phone numbers for the companies that you posted.  There is also a
third web site that gets its data from yet another source, but it has
a certain "feature" that would probably throw off your automation
software; so I didn't bother to query it.  The "feature" is that for
some companies, after you have entered the name and city/state or zip,
it prompts you to choose from a list of possible cities before it
displays the results.

Please review the data that I have posted below.  A few of the results
don't exactly match the company names that you provided.  Also, there
are some companies that only the first web site found, some companies
that only the second web site found, and a few that neither web site
found.  If the data is acceptable and you don't mind querying two web
sites to obtain the addresses and phone numbers, then I will provide
you with the web sites, as well as any other information you need to
set up your automation software.

So how do you get your automation software to obtain the address and
phone number of a company?  There are two different ways to do this,
and I will describe each method below.

METHOD A
--------

This method lets your automation software obtain the address and phone
number listings by simulating what a person would do.  It loads the
search page, fills in some fields, and clicks on a submit button.

For the SuperPages.com web site:

1) Have your automation software go to the Detailed Search page:
http://yp.superpages.com/ypform.phtml?SRC=&STYPE=&PG=&C=&N=&E=&T=&S=&Z=&A=&X=&P=&R=

As you can see on that page, there are a bunch of text fields.  You do
not need to fill in all of the fields.

2) Have your automation software fill in the 'Business Name' field
with the company's name.

3) Have your automation software fill in the 'ZIP' field with the
company's zip code.

4) Have your automation software click on the 'Find It' button.

SuperPages.com will return a page with all of the address and phone
number listings for the company name and zip code that was submitted.


For the YellowPages.com web site:

1) Have your automation software go to the Zip Code or Area Code
Search page:
http://www.yellowpages.com/asp/search/searchresult.asp?page=home&moresearchoptions=zipareasearch&typeorname=&search=&city=&state=

2) Have your automation software select the "Name of Business" option
in the 'Search by' drop-down box.

3) Have your automation software fill in the 'Enter Name OR Type of
Business' field with the company's name.

4) Have your automation software fill in the 'Search By Zip Code'
field with the company's zip code.

5) Have your automation software click the 'search' button that is
right next to the 'Search By Zip Code' field.

YellowPages.com will return a page with all of the address and phone
number listings for the company name and zip code that was submitted.

--------

This method lets your automation software obtain the address and phone
number listings without having to fill in any fields or click on any
buttons.  But your automation software may have to manipulate the
company's name.

For the SuperPages.com web site:

Let's use one of the companies that you provided as an example:
UNEEDA BOLT & SCREW COMPANY    MOONACHIE NJ 07074 

The following URL takes you to the SuperPages.com results page that
displays the address and phone number listings for that company:
http://yp.superpages.com/listings.phtml?SRC=&STYPE=&PG=L&CB=&C=&N=UNEEDA+BOLT+%26+SCREW+COMPANY&E=&T=&R=N&S=&Z=07074&A=&X=&P=&search=Find+It

If you look closely at the URL, the company name and zip code are
embedded in it.  However, some of the characters in the company name
have been converted.  All of the spaces are now plus signs, and the
"&" has been replaced with "%26".  These are examples of the types of
changes that your automation software must make to the company's name.

Here is what your automation software must do:

1) Make the necessary replacements within the company name:
   - each space must be replaced with '+'
   - each ampersand (&) must be replaced with '%26'
   - each apostrophe must be replaced with '%27'
   - each comma must be replaced with '%2C'
   - each exclamation point (!) must be replaced with '%21'
   - periods (.) and hyphens (-) do not need to be replaced
   
This should cover all of the non-alphanumeric characters that may
appear in the company name.  If a non-alphanumeric character appears
in the company name and is not listed above, please request a
clarification and I will provide the replacement to you.

2) Build a URL that starts with the following:

number using your automated software.  Use Method A if it is easier to
fill in text fields, make selections from drop-down lists, and click
on buttons in your automated software.  Use Method B if it is easier
to replace characters within strings in your automated software.

Note: The 'search' button on the Zip Code or Area Code Search page of
the YellowPages.com web site is tied-in to JavaScript code instead of
an HTML submit button, so it could possibly cause problems with your
automation software.  If you experience problems with submitting the
YellowPages.com search page, use Method B instead of Method A.
