Hi gabby,

I assume you want to do this yourself, rather than pay exorbitant
hourly garage rates.

There is only one way you can do it.

If you don't have a scan tool to access the on-board computer which
can clear the trouble/problem code, disconnect the negative cable on
the battery for one to two minutes. This will clear the code.

However, if the 'check engine light' comes on after you restart the
engine, you'll need to have the engine scanned at a garage.

There are approximately five different sensors on the engine that
could cause the 'check engine light' to come on. These include the
following:

02 Sensor: Monitors the oxygen content going out in the exhaust.

TPS Sensor: On the throttle bod -- monitors the position of the
throttle plate.

Map Sensor: Monitors the engine vacuum.

Coolant Sensor: Monitors engine temperature.

Knock Sensor: Monitors spark pre-ignition.

The mechanic will access the on-board computer to see which sensor is
causing this particular warning light to come on and he'll check into
it further.

Without a scan, my husband's educated guess is if your engine is
running alright, it's been his experience that it's the 02 sensor
causing the problem. If that IS the problem, the only thing you can do
is have that unit replaced.

We wish you well,

Hello gabby2222~

I am not posting this as an official answer just yet, because the
technique I'm explaining to you works in most--but not all--vehicles.

My husband, who is a whiz mechanic, says that you probably just need
to unhook the battery, wait about 30 seconds, then hook it back up. If
this works, please let me know, and I will post it as an official
Answer. Thank you.

However, my husband stresses that resetting the light will only reset
the computer and won't take care of whatever underlying problem caused
the light to turn on in the first place. You should probably take your
vehicle into a shop and have the codes scanned.

Good luck!
