Where can I find a modern version of "Taming of the Shrew"?

Are you interested only in a "translation" of the Shakespeare play
into modern English? Or would you be just as interested in an
adaption (or "appropriation") of the play's plot and characters into a
successful stage musical and film production?

Hello Gayla!

Since you've not specified if you're looking for modern translations
or modern adaptations, I've searched for both for you.

Probably the best known and widely loved modern adaptation of William
Shakespeare's "The Taming of the Shrew" is Cole Porter's "Kiss Me
Kate". First produced in 1948, "Kiss Me Kate" ran for more than 1000
performances before closing. The 1953 movie version, which garnered
an Academy Award nomination for Best Scoring of a Musical Picture,
starred Kathryn Grayson as Katharine, Howard Keel as Petruchio, and
legendary Broadway choreaographer Bob Fosse as Hortensio.

While not precisely faithful to Shakespeare's original play, the
musical is still a wonderfully done adaptation, and worth a look. You
can still rent it from most video shops, borrow it from the library in
VHS format. Several versions are also slated for DVD release this
Spring.

A more recent remake is the 1999 romantic comedy "10 Things I Hate
About You". Set in a modern day high school, "10 Things I Hate About
You" stars Julia Stiles and Heath Ledger in the lead roles.

IMDB contributor MovieBuff writes:

"Meet the Stratford sisters: pretty and popular Bianca (Larisa
Oleynik), who has never had a date; and Kat (Julia Stiles), her older
sibling, an ill-tempered harridan whose acerbic wit is matched only by
her steadfast determination to alienate any guy who might be remotely
interested in her. Unfortunately, strict rules in the Stratford
household forbid Bianca from having a boyfriend until her odious
sister has one of her own-a situation that seems highly improbable
considering Kat is a social disaster. Bianca's desperation for romance
turns into a convoluted scheme to match Kat with her male
equivalent--a guy whose reputation is so infamous, Kat might rise to
the challenge and find him worthy of her concealed charms. Mating
mayhem ensues when Patrick Verona (Heath Ledger)--a sullen young man
with a mysterious past--is bribed by Bianca's wannabe boyfriend
(Andrew Keegan) to woo and win Kat, in order to clear the way for
Bianca to begin dating."
