Hi lwilson,
I hate it when those pesky annoyances keep bugging me! You've come to
the right place! Here's how to put your favorites in alphabetical
order, in XP:
1) Go to the start button and right click. Choose EXPLORE.
2) ONLY ON THE LEFT, Under C-Drive/Documents and Settings, select the
profile that you want changed, --so the folders are showing under the
profile as in an outline fashion.
3) ONLY ON THE LEFT, highlight FAVORITES. Ignore the folders showing
in the left panel.
4) ABOVE THE LEFT, in the Windows Explore horizontal bar, from left to
right you see: file--edit--VIEW ----SELECT VIEW: and move the mouse
down to: ARRANGE ICONS BY ...
5) Select NAME. This sorts the individual links into alphabetical
order. You can watch them change in the panel on the right.
Hope this makes your day!

Interesting. Of course the icons in Explore were rearranged. But the
Favorites list on my desktop remains in disarray.....

I'll help you! Is the icon that you click on -on your desktop a
shortcut? Right click on it, choose properties, it'll tell you. If so,
click the button for "Find Target", then, note that location. Then, go
into Explore again, and navigate to that location and follow the
instructions above. Tell me how you fare...

Thanks. All of the Favorites in the window next to my home page are
indeed internet shortcuts. I access the pane by clicking on Favorites
on the upper tool bar. I use these sites often (e.g. my online
banking site). I do not see the "Find Target" button. When I "Add to
Favorites" the new shortcut used to be slotted into the pane in
alphabetical order. Now I have alphabet soup.

Never fear, we'll get to the bottom of it. Indeed, XP makes this
difficult, but it's very possible. Since you are accessing this from
the link on the tool bar, we need to isolate the specific folder that
accesses. Let's try this: look at the original directions I gave you.
Instead of selecting YOUR profile, select ALL USERS. I didn't suggest
this before because on my computer (XP) that is empty so I couldn't
test it. FOllow all instructions as stated except select ALL USERS.
You can tell if it's going to work because if, when you get to the
"ARRANGE ICONS BY" and NAME does not have a checkmark beside it, that
was the problem. Simply select NAME at that point.
Let me know. I'll stay with you on this to get it resolved!
I am in the Pacific time zone (Seattle) and have the computer till
4:30pm today, then back again at 7:30 am, so don't think I'm ignoring
you...

The Name identifier is checked under All Users. No change. I double
checked under Adminsitartor. No check next to Names. I also cannot
select Names under Administrator. It doesn't "take". BTW the pane
next to my homepage is unchanged. Do I need to reboot to effect the
changes made in Explorer? Doesn't make sense, but with Windows in
general that would be par for the course.....

Hi again. I kept digging and found some interesting information at
the Microsoft Support website. I attempted to follow the instructions
at the link below, and I didn't find the "SORT BY NAME" option they
described, in the location they said it was. I reread it and made sure
it was for XP, and it was. Then, I read more. Seems I (and probably
you) need something called a "Windows Desktop Update" for it to even
appear.
Read these:
Start Menu and Favorites Menu Are Not Listed in Alphabetical Order
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=177482
How to Add or Remove Windows Desktop Update
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;165695
You'll need to determine if you have the Windows Desktop Update
installed, I'm betting you don't. Be careful, there's an awful lot of
caveats. I'm off the computer till morning, so I'll look for a post
from you then...
