Question ID: 184771
I am trying to find quality manufacturers of RFID technlogy. This
includes the tags (much like a tag on a Music CD that needs to be
scanned before you can remove it from the retail store). It also
includes a reader and I am looking for readers that can be mounted
around doorways to detect a tagged device leaving an office or
building. Can you assist me in finding these hardware technologies
and who manufacturers them. Websites are all I need to look at and I
am happy to up the price ante if good results as I am a first timer
here.

Hello pgirgis,

Thank you for your question.

There appears to be numerous manufacturers of these devices worldwide.
For example, one of the first hits on my search produced an
alphabetical directory with hundereds of companies:

http://www.frontlinemagazine.com/rfidonline/listings.htx

RFID Source Book by Company

All companies listed in the RFID Source Book are first- and
second-tier manufacturers of RFID and RTLS products and services.

Sampling several of these listings shows the following types of
information for each of the manufacturers:

"Accu-Sort Systems, Inc.

Accu-Sort Systems has provided integrated solutions for industrial
applications since 1971. They offer both scanning systems and radio
frequency identification identification systems for a number of
industrial applications. For more information concerning their product
offerings, contact them at the address below.

-shippping and receiving
-scale management

You will find this type of information for each of their hundreds of
listings. Some companies will be Europe or UK only, and if that is not
of interest to you, can be passed over.

Another random example:

Beigel Technology Corporation

Beigel Technology Corporation can provide a full range of product
development services, including RFID systems.

I would think this directory listing is exactly what you are seeking.
However, there is a great deal of information on these systems
available on the Internet, and I continued to locate more sites that
may be of interest to you:

RFID Technology - Making the Right Choices

Bob Scher, CEO, Dynasys Technologies Inc.
Clearwater, Florida

The use of RFID is very quickly becoming a popular technology choice
for automatic data collection. It allows for a fast, reliable solution
in industries where bar code technology could not previously provide a
satisfactory result. With RFID technology moving forward at such a
rapid rate, there are more and more vendors claiming to be experts in
the field, leaving the end user with the difficult choice of selecting
the optimum hardware and a suitably qualified solution provider.

Choosing the Right Technology

The first and very important part of choosing your solution is to
correctly select the right technology...

Another directory appears at the DMOZ open directory project:

Business: Business Services: Asset Management: Asset Tracking: RFID
http://dmoz.org/Business/Business_Services/Asset_Management/Asset_Tracking/RFID/

Here you will find links to several dozen manufacturers of RFID
devices, for example:

Amskan Ltd - Australian company designs, develops and manufactures
Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) transponders, readers, and
couplers.

Cansec - Canadian company offers i-button reader access solutions.

CopyTag - Offers a wide range of RFID hardware and software solutions.
UK

Destron Fearing - Manufactures RFID products for animals including
livestock and pet tracking solutions.

DTE Automation - Manufactures RFID transponder systems for factory
automation, access systems and stock handling.

...and so on. All of these sites are linked at the above directory.

And of course, Google has its own directory listing:

Business > Business Services > Asset Management > Asset Tracking >
RFID
http://directory.google.com/Top/Business/Business_Services/Asset_Management/Asset_Tracking/RFID/

I think you can well be overwhelmed with information on these systems
if you choose to be. My simple search for [rfid +manufacturer]
produced over 12,000 hits! You can view the results of this search
here should you find you desire more companies to view than those
listed and linked to above:

Search Strategy:

rfid +manufacturer

I trust my research has provided you with links and sites for many
sources of the rfid devices you desire. If a link above should fail to
work or anything require further explanation or research, please do
post a Request for Clarification prior to rating the answer and
closing the question and I will be pleased to assist further.

I originally said 4 stars as I thought the answer was well worthwhile
and since the recent additional comment, I must say 5 stars is the way
to go. Thank you very much for all your efforts - saved me a lot of
research time myself. Great response and just what I asked for.

This company is included in clouseau-ga's industry list. However, I
draw your attention to Alien Technology at
http://www.alientechnology.com/ as they specialize in low-cost RFID.
The recently signed a deal with Gillete to provide RFID for their
products.

I would agree with the above poster, as long as you don't want an
entirely "out of the box solution" as the ePC standard that Alien is a
part of is pretty new. However, if you AREN'T looking for a strictly
out of the box solution, the ePC RFID standard to which Alien is
compliant is most likely "the wave of the future." (I work for none of
these companies; I've just been following the ePC movement for a few
years as a matter of personal interest)

More info on this emerging standard is at
http://www.autoidcenter.org/main.asp . To fully grasp what the
implications are, one only need to understand that Walmart is
considering "urging" suppliers to put the tags on ALL products. It
will change the way supply chain management works.

Please also note that one of the advantages of being "ePC Compliant"
is that tags from one vendor will work with readers from a different
vendor; it's an open standard. You don't HAVE to buy the tags from
Alien, Matrics also makes compliant tags. Really, really neat stuff,
a little scary in a big brother way, but a good read none-the-less. I
highly recommend browsing through there.
