Every time when I click on "Shutdown" the computer shuts down only to
come right back on as though I had clicked on "Restart".  This just
started out of the blue and I have no idea what I did to cause this
situation.  I can shut the computer off when it comes back on but this
a nuisance.  I am using Windows 98 second edition

So, as you can see, this is a known problem.

I would suggest trying the second Microsoft Article first as it seems
to target the problem you are experiencing. If it is unsuccessful,
review the details in the first Knowledgebase article.

I waded through all your answer and found a download in the Articale
239887.  This download cured the problem so that now my computer shuts
down and does not restart.  The only thing is it is very slow both
shutting down and starting but I think this is caused by other
problems.  Thank you for your help.  I had offered $5.00 and on a
previous session $10.00 so I think you should get the entire $15.00
for your effort.
