Question ID: 184987
I'm running RedHat 7.1 (Linux 2.4.18-24.7.xsmp). Please point out some
reputable websites that teach about kernel tuning for beginners (i.e.
it should be easy to understand). I want to know how to increase
system limits e.g. number of open files, number of processes and etc.
Please ensure the information is relevant for RedHat 7.x or Linux
2.4.x. Thank you!

BTW please don't mention about Apache tuning, MySQL tuning or etc. I
want specific answers to my questions above and please also refer to
my comments below for more information. Thank you.

Howdy whizhost!

It would help answerers/commenters if they knew what the server
is being used for, that is, web page serving (HTTP, and if so,
what server and version (Apache 1.3, etc.), email, FTP serving,
etc. or combination thereof, and hardware configuration for the
server as well, as all of these are factors when it comes to the
tuning of any server.

Thanks! denco

This is a webserver using Apache 1.3.x. It has a dual PIII 1 GHz CPU
with 4 GB of RAM. It's used for everything; http, email, FTP and etc.

The reason I'm asking the question above is two fold, first I want to
know how to verify my system limits and how to increase them. Then I
want to see some recommendations on reasonable amounts because I've a
heavy loaded server.

My max open files is now set to 30,000. The main purpose of this
question is to find a "brake" to avoid a runaway server.

This is a link to kernel tuning.. and the site is talking about tuning
everything on linux.
http://linuxperf.nl.linux.org/general/kerneltuning.html

Also, Pensacola...
Pensacola introduces two new areas of functionality beyond
Red Hat Linux 7.2 (Enigma):
 o Advanced clustering technology
o Linux kernel tuned specifically for server workloads
You can get your copy of Pensacola at
ftp://ftp.redhat.com/pub/redhat/linux/beta/pensacola/

I hope this will help you
