Howdy whizhost! It would help answerers/commenters if they knew what the server is being used for, that is, web page serving (HTTP, and if so, what server and version (Apache 1.3, etc.), email, FTP serving, etc. or combination thereof, and hardware configuration for the server as well, as all of these are factors when it comes to the tuning of any server. Thanks! denco |

This is a webserver using Apache 1.3.x. It has a dual PIII 1 GHz CPU with 4 GB of RAM. It's used for everything; http, email, FTP and etc. The reason I'm asking the question above is two fold, first I want to know how to verify my system limits and how to increase them. Then I want to see some recommendations on reasonable amounts because I've a heavy loaded server. My max open files is now set to 30,000. The main purpose of this question is to find a "brake" to avoid a runaway server. |

This is a link to kernel tuning.. and the site is talking about tuning everything on linux. http://linuxperf.nl.linux.org/general/kerneltuning.html Also, Pensacola... Pensacola introduces two new areas of functionality beyond Red Hat Linux 7.2 (Enigma): o Advanced clustering technology o Linux kernel tuned specifically for server workloads You can get your copy of Pensacola at ftp://ftp.redhat.com/pub/redhat/linux/beta/pensacola/ I hope this will help you |
