The spider apears to be a variety of Huntsman. They're really cool,
except their size can frighten any chicks staying with us, which means
I have to relocate it outside. The biggest I've seen is the size of my
outstretched hand.

Hi Waterfall,

My boyfriend, a scholar in all things froggy/toady reports that it
might very well be, especially if you're located in Hawaii or
Australia (I'm guessing it's the latter based on the web address).
He's never seen one in person, and isn't sure about the size reference
in the picture, though, so he's unwilling to really commit.

It looks vaguely like the cane toads I used to squish with my car in
Hawaii, though the ones in HI were pretty large--fist sized or better.
(And there were so many of them, really, there was no way to avoid
squishing, especially after dark when they'd sit on the pavement to
keep warm).

He's fascinated (and wigged out by the spider's size), so we're still
working on it.

Hope that helps

Further, based on this website:
http://animaldiversity.ummz.umich.edu/accounts/bufo/b._marinus.html
Which says, "Bufo marinus possesses huge paratoid glands stretching
from the anterior side of the tympanum to halfway down the back"
The glands were "evident" to my boyfriend, so he thinks that it is,
probably, a cane toad.

Robert would not be able to entice ME into his domicile if that's the
sort of company he's keeping! ;-D
