Question ID: 185341
How do i instantly solidify organic matter eg; dog excrement, can be
from within or out. ie: some form of solid skin & does not have to be
permanent. What ever is used must be portable & environmentally
friendly.
Preferably not freezing.

What do you really mean by instantly? Even freezing takes time!

Request for Question Clarification by knowledge_seeker-ga on 04 Apr 2003 07:20 PST
To clarify, you are looking for something that would "treat" dog
excrement on site, perhaps to make scooping easier? Some portable
method that would make it solid at least long enough to get it cleaned
up?

Or am I missing the point altogether?

I think if you gave us a little more detail, someone here could come
up with some ingenious ways to accomplish what you want.

Thanks--

Hi gragra-ga,

This has certainly been an interesting search! The fact is, after
spending most of today on your question, I come up with only one
definitive product for you (see below). Since I really don't think
that one product constitutes a $100 answer, I've also spent a great
deal of effort brain-storming some new ideas that you might want to
try implementing.

Naturally, the success of any of these ideas is dependent on several
factors – the main one being the quantity of feces you are dealing
with. Some of these ideas will be cost effective only if you have one
very small dog. Others will be more practical if you are considering
more of a large-scale cleanup venture – say a park.

I've listed the sure-fire product first, followed by another similar
product that I can't find a source for. After that are the rest of my
ideas.

"..spray Vetzyme Shift-it directly on to the waste at a distance of

CLEAR UP SPRAY – CCL INDUSTRIES

I am unable to find an actual source for this product, and all of the
press releases are dated 1998. It is possible that it no longer
exists. CCL appears to now be a packaging and labeling company.

"Clear Up Spray" by British company CCL Industries, is a high pressure
aerosol spray that will actually freeze those feces into a solid mass,
ready to be picked up and easily disposed of. Convenient, stylish, and
above all, fun.

Freeze spray helps pet owners scoop mess

"Clear-up spray is an aerosol spray that freezes any horrible, messy
dog doo and transforms it into a solid, hard lump which can be easily
picked up," explained Nick Westcott, managing director and founder of
The Animal Health Co Limited.

The spray, which sold for 3.50 pounds ($5.72) at Crufts, Britain's
premier dog show, will normally retail at 5.80 pounds for a 400ml can.

A search for "Freeze Spray" will net you many websites that sell
spray for freezing and testing component parts. These same products
are also touted for their ability to freeze gum for easy clean up.
The package sizes are similar (200-400 ml) and they appear to be the
same basic product as the pet-waste spray. I've just given a handful
of examples below.

LATEX SPRAY
========================

I had an idea that there might be a latex spray product that would
work to encase the feces fairly quickly. I THOUGHT I found the
perfect thing  --------

"Sani-fingers
hypoallergenic, nontoxic, latex, spray-on gloves

"This quick-drying polymer hydrocarbon aerosol comes in a handy,
four-inch can that fits snugly in a pocket or purse. Whenever you're
going to work on the car engine, dig in the garden or visit a fast
food outlet, just spray a light coat on your palms and finger tops.
The latex cures in three seconds giving you a comfortable but durable
protection from grease and dirt. After use, the half gloves can be
easily peeled off."

Sounds perfect doesn't it? Except it doesn't seem to be real. The
site is an "idea" site, where people toss out half-baked
"inventions"….

HALF-BAKERY
http://www.halfbakery.com/idea/Sani-fingers

There are however, other latex products that can be sprayed or painted
on and provide a semi-solid coating. The downside is that latex takes
20-30 minutes to dry completely.

One avenue, (to my surprise!) is latex clothing – primarily "extreme"
lingerie – that is applied directly to the body. I can't point you to
those sites from here, but can leave it to you to look them up. Do a
search on Google for LIQUID LATEX. Note that all the ones I found
entail paint-on rather than spray-on application.

Another avenue is spray-on latex coatings that are used for tool
handles. These come in colors, which adds an interesting twist to your
cleanup job -----

PLASTI DIP FLEXIBLE COATING

"The flexible coating that won't chip, crack or peel." Comes in dip
container or spray.

PLASTI DIP - FLEXIBLE COATING
http://www.globalnovelties.com/auto/plastidip.htm

Of course, I'm not sure you couldn't use regular clear (or colored for
that matter!) latex or enamel spray paint or other regular aerosol
coatings. It would be a matter of testing its strength once your
"product" is coated.

LIQUID BANDAGE
========================

Another thought, but maybe not strong enough and too expensive if
purchased retail, but perhaps worth looking into in bulk ---

"New-Skin Liquid Bandage is clear, flexible, waterproof, lets skin
breathe and will stay on in places where other bandages will fall off.
It completely covers the entire wound to keep out dirt and germs.

INCINERATION
===============

One suggestion would be on-site incineration, maybe via blow torch.
Obviously, safety would be an issue, especially in dry grass. But
enough heat would essentially turn your piles into ash.

===================================
SUPER FAST FREEZE – LIQUID NITROGEN
===================================

Ok, I haven't seen this done with dog droppings, but can't see any
reason why it wouldn't work if you can get your hands on this stuff.
(Know anyone in a chemistry lab?) Just remember, the dog feces will
become brittle and will shatter instantly if you drop them.

And, as an aside, if it doesn't work for your yard, you can always

DRY ICE
=========

This is the other stuff they use for those fog machines at dance clubs
if they don't use liquid nitrogen. It is frozen solid carbon dioxide
and can be purchased by regular consumers. I'm not exactly sure how
you would apply this to your dog piles, but I imagine direct
application would work quickly and effectively –

You can usually purchase dry ice from refrigeration companies, ice
delivery companies, and party-supply companies.

===================

So, I think I've tapped out my brain on this project. Obviously, the
first product at the top of the page does exactly what you want, but
you seemed to indicate that you might like options other than
freezing. I hope you’re pleased with what I've provided for you. If
you need any clarification on anything I've said, please feel free to
ask. I'd be happy to explain further.

Thanks so much for your question,

-K~
