Hello loebandco:

Thanks for the interesting question.

I have been able to find some very authoritative sources for the
information you require.

Question: How many Nannies are there in the US?

Answer: 298,000

Source:
Estimating the Size and Components of the U.S. Child Care Workforce
and
Caregiving Population, May 2002 (Page 6)
URL: http://www.ccw.org/pubs/workforceestimatereport.pdf

Question: How many Au Pair's?

Answer: 12,000

Source: IRS -International Taxpayer - Au Pairs
URL: http://www.irs.gov/businesses/small/international/article/0,,id=96420,00.html

Question: Is there a governing agency?

Answer: For au pairs, the governing agency is Bureau of Educational
and Cultural Affairs (ECA) of the Department of State.

ECA
URL: http://exchanges.state.gov/education/jexchanges/private/aupair_brochure.htm

For nannies, I'm afraid there is no official governing agency. There
are associations and networks and employment agencies aplenty - but no
government body to which they are directly responsible.

Question: How much money is spent on childcare by Nannies, Au Pairs,
Baby Sitters, etc.?

Answer: Unfortunately, since the categories you mention are
"unlicensed" child care, there is little (or no) reliable expenditure
figures for the entire country. However, from what I've read doing
this research, I would estimate that the total market is somewhere
between $5 - $15 billion annually.

Source:
Child Care and Its Impact on California’s Economy
URL: http://www.nedlc.org/summary.pdf
Quote: "The significant contributions listed above speak only to the
impact of the licensed child care sector. Although data uncertainties
make an analysis of the unlicensed child care industry difficult, the
total economic impact would be much higher if the informal sector was
included."

Question: Are there groups or organizations which support Nannies
and/or Au Pair's?

Answer: The following groups are involved in support of Nannies and/or
Au Pairs.

International Nanny Association
URL: http://www.nanny.org/
Executive: http://www.nanny.org/pat.htm

National Association of Nannies
URL: http://www.nannyassociation.com/
Executive: http://www.nannyassociation.com/nanboard.html

International Au Pair Association
URL: http://www.iapa.org/
Executive: http://www.iapa.org/Docs/Organisations/ExCom/Meat.php4

Universal Au Pair Association
URL: http://www.uapa.net/

Question: Are there any individuals who have emerged as 'experts' on
nannies/au pair's/baby sitters

Answers: Of course, any of the upper-level staff/management at the
above associations would be a great place to start. The links for
those people are included above.

The 18th Annual Conference of the International Nanny Association is
coming up in June (in San Diego). An excellent list of experts can be
found (under "INA Presenters and Moderators") on the conference
homepage at:

Question: Are there any reference guides, books (etc.) on how to

Only piece of information we didn't seem to get clarity on was market
size and if that has changed (gone up or down). Let me know if you
came across that or if that is something you can get us. Thanks.
Good initial work!

Hi loebandco:

I did some further searching for you and was still unable to find any
reliable information on the nanny/au-pair/babysitting markets for the
U.S. (or any other jurisdiction).

I did, however, find a study listed for $300 - but that's a little
steep.

U.S. CHILD DAY CARE SERVICES, NANNY & AU PAIR AGENCIES: AN INDUSTRY
ANALYSIS
URL: http://www.mkt-data-ent.com/daycareaupairtoc.htm
Check out the section "Executive Overview & Major Findings".

What I am also going to do is email each of the associations I listed
for you to see whether they have any data they are willing to share.

I will update you here as soon as I hear anything (positive or
negative).

Thanks for your patience.

Should I wait to rate or are you ok with me going ahead?

Clarification of Answer by websearcher-ga on 03 Apr 2003 16:21 PST
Hi loebandco:

It's completely up to you when (and if) you rate me - makes no
difference to me. :-)

Just a note, once you've rated a question, there's no way to change
your rating. Either way. ;-)

Thanks

Hi loebandco:

Just a quick update.

I have only received one response to my four emails as of yet. I heard
back from Valarie Gauntt of The National Association of Nannies. She
hinted that she had information, but first wanted to know what company
I was from. I explained that I was from Google Answers and I haven't
heard back since (that was 24 hours ago).

If she doesn't contact me sometime through next week, I'll pass her
email address to you and you can try.

Further updates as events warrant.

This is great ... please let me know who to call and/or e-mail or
direct me to their sites. Thanks for your extra help!

Hi loebandco:

Well, the four sites I contacted are the ones I gave in my original
answer. That is:

International Nanny Association
URL: http://www.nanny.org/
Executive: http://www.nanny.org/pat.htm

National Association of Nannies
URL: http://www.nannyassociation.com/
Executive: http://www.nannyassociation.com/nanboard.html

International Au Pair Association
URL: http://www.iapa.org/
Executive: http://www.iapa.org/Docs/Organisations/ExCom/Meat.php4

Universal Au Pair Association
URL: http://www.uapa.net/

The contact (who never wrote back) at the National Association of
Nannies is:

Valarie Gauntt
Vgauntt@aol.com

Perhaps, if you let her know your company name, she'll be more
forthcoming with you.

My email to the UAPA bounced back as undeliverable.

The addresses I emailed to for the other two organizations (and never
heard back from) are:

mailbox@iapa.org

and a web-based form at:

http://www.nanny.org/contact.htm

Good luck! If I hear anything more, I'll be sure to post it here. And
thanks for the great rating.

Hi loebandco:

I just got this back from IAPA:

******************
Dear Darren,

Thank you for your email.

I apologise for the delay in getting back to you. Unfortunately I do not have
the information that you have requested.

What I can suggest is that you contact one of the IAPA Members in the US and see
if they are able to offer you any assistance.

You can find a full list of IAPA members and their contact details on the IAPA
website: http://www.iapa.org

Kind Regards,

Paul
