Hello rustyragtop,

Thank you for your question.

First of all, you are a manufacturer and fall under that broad
classification. Headings 31-33
http://www.census.gov/epcd/naics02/naicod02.htm#N31

Classifications are made depending on the primary materials used in
your products. For example, if you wre making clay sewer pipe or
products:

http://www.census.gov/epcd/naics02/def/NDEF327.HTM#N32711

32711 Pottery, Ceramics, and Plumbing Fixture Manufacturing

This industry comprises establishments primarily engaged in shaping,
molding, glazing, and firing pottery, ceramics, and plumbing fixtures
made entirely or partly of clay or other ceramic materials.

Cross-References. Establishments primarily engaged in--

Manufacturing ferrite microwave devices and electronic components--are
classified in Subsector 334, Computer and Electronic Product
Manufacturing;

Manufacturing enameled iron and steel plumbing fixtures--are
classified in Industry 33299, All Other Fabricated Metal Product
Manufacturing;

Manufacturing metal bathroom accessories--are classified in Subsector
332, Fabricated Metal Product Manufacturing;

Manufacturing plastic bathroom accessories, cultured marble, and other
plastic plumbing fixtures--are classified in Industry 32619, Other
Plastics Product Manufacturing; and

Manufacturing clay building materials, such as ceramic tile, bricks,
and clay roofing tiles, and refractories--are classified in Industry
32712, Clay Building Material and Refractories Manufacturing.

Or Concrete

Concrete Sewer Pipe

327332 Concrete Pipe Manufacturing

This U.S. industry comprises establishments primarily engaged in
manufacturing concrete pipe.

SIC Corresponding Index Entries
327332 Conduits, concrete, manufacturing
327332 Culvert pipe, concrete, manufacturing
327332 Cylinder pipe, prestressed concrete, manufacturing
327332 Irrigation pipe, concrete, manufacturing
327332 Pipe, concrete, manufacturing
327332 Precast concrete pipe manufacturing
327332 Pressure pipe, reinforced concrete, manufacturing
327332 Prestressed concrete pipes manufacturing
327332 Sewer pipe, concrete, manufacturing

So, I visited your site to see your primary product. It appears the
primary material is iron based.

http://www.genengco.com/sealtite.htm

Saddle base is constructed of tough, durable cast iron
Stainless steel strap assemblies
Polyisoprene O-Ring forms seal between saddle and main

The strap and O-ring would be accessories or a small part of the
compostion of the product. Consequently, I believe this is the proper
classification category to determine your code:

331511 Iron Foundries
http://www.census.gov/epcd/naics02/def/NDEF331.HTM#N33151

This U.S. industry comprises establishments primarily engaged in
pouring molten pig iron or iron alloys into molds to manufacture
castings, (e.g., cast iron man-hole covers, cast iron pipe, cast iron
skillets). Establishments in this industry purchase iron made in other
establishments.

Cross-References. Establishments primarily engaged in manufacturing
iron castings and further manufacturing them into finished products
are classified based on the specific finished product.

Further references are made as follows:

SIC Corresponding Index Entries
331511 Cast iron pipe and pipe fittings manufacturing
331511 Fittings, soil and pressure pipe, cast iron, manufacturing
331511 Pipe and pipe fittings, cast iron, manufacturing
331511 Pipe couplings, cast iron, manufacturing
331511 Sewer pipe, cast iron, manufacturing
331511 Soil pipe, cast iron, manufacturing
331511 Water pipe, cast iron, manufacturing

Unless I misunderstood the primary material composition of your
Sealtite products, this would be your NAICS code - 331511. And if I
have misunderstood in any way, please do request clarification and
provide me with additional details and I will be happy to continue
researching for you.

Just to be a little more complete in this answer, the following are
all the codes that appear when the NAICS database is queried for
"sewer":

http://eire.census.gov/cgi-bin/epcd/srchnaics02defs

-Sewer cleaning and rodding services 562998 All Other Miscellaneous
Waste Management Services
-Sewer cleanout services 562998 All Other Miscellaneous Waste
Management Services
-Sewer construction 237110 234910 Water and Sewer Line and Related
Structures Construction
-Sewer hook-up and connection, building 238220 235110 Plumbing,
Heating, and Air-Conditioning Contractors
-Sewer main, pipe and connection, construction 237110 234910 Water and
Sewer Line and Related Structures Construction
-Sewer pipe and fittings, clay, manufacturing 327123 Other Structural
Clay Product Manufacturing
-Sewer pipe, cast iron, manufacturing 331511 Iron Foundries
-Sewer pipe, concrete, manufacturing 327332 Concrete Pipe
Manufacturing
-Sewer systems 221320 Sewage Treatment Facilities

This further confirms that 331511 is the proper classification for
your products.

Clouseau: Thanks for your explanation. It looks as though I need to
explain a little more in depth. Our insurance provider calls us an
"Assembler", not a "Manufacturer". We are not a foundry! We do not
take an item from raw material to finished good. We design it, have a
pattern made and place it in a foundry owned by others. They cast to
our specifications - as many as we order, when we order. These
castings are then shipped to us. We "assemble" all of the components
and ship the finished product. We have always considered ourselves to
be a manufacturer because we are ultimately liable for our products.
However, as described above, we are technically not manufacturers.
All of our SEALTITE Saddles are either totally Cast Iron or a
combination of Cast Iron and PVC - bonded with a two-part urethane
adhesive. These are our principle product! Our other products are
Cast Iron, Cast Iron/PVC, Steel (welded), Ductile Iron (DI), Steel/DI,
Cast Aluminum or High Density Polyethelene (HDPE). Your answer should
probably be based on our Principle Product, the SEALTITE Sewer Pipe
Saddle. Thanks for the work you have put into this so far!! I await
your reply. Rusty

Hello Rusty,

Thanks for all of the clarification. It is, indeed, helpful, though it
may make finding the code more difficult, as I am sure you have found
out!

Let me work on this further today and I will post as soon as I have
additional information.

Hello again Rusty,

I called Dr. NAICS at 1-888-75NAICS . The codes mention that:

"If you believe your activity may not be adequately treated in this
index, email Dr. NAICS or call 1-888-75NAICS."

Very helpful folks here! The good doctor confirmed that if you are not
a "foundry", which I now understand you are not, my code is not
appropriate.

He researched beginning with the SIC code for "Fabricated Metal
Products - Valve Fittings" (SIC 34349) and cross referenced to the
NAIC codes to arrive at 332919:

332919 Other Metal Valve and Pipe Fitting Manufacturing

This U.S. industry comprises establishments primarily engaged in
manufacturing metal valves (except industrial valves, fluid power
valves, fluid power hose fittings, and plumbing fixture fittings and
trim).

Cross-References. Establishments primarily engaged in--

-Manufacturing fluid power valves and hose fittings--are classified in
U.S. Industry 332912, Fluid Power Valve and Hose Fitting
Manufacturing;
-Manufacturing industrial valves--are classified in U.S. Industry
332911, Industrial Valve Manufacturing;
-Manufacturing plastics aerosol spray nozzles--are classified in U.S.
Industry 326199, All Other Plastics Product Manufacturing;
-Casting iron pipe fittings and couplings without machining--are
classified in U.S. Industry 331511, Iron Foundries;
-Manufacturing metal couplings from purchased metal pipe--are
classified in U.S. Industry 332996, Fabricated Pipe and Pipe -Fitting
Manufacturing; and
-Manufacturing plastics pipe fittings and couplings--are classified in
U.S. Industry 326122, Plastics Pipe and Pipe Fitting Manufacturing.

Corresponding Entries:

332919 Traps, water, manufacturing
332919 Water traps manufacturing
332919 Aerosol valves manufacturing
332919 Boiler couplings and drains, plumbing and heating-type,
manufacturing
332919 Breakers, vacuum, plumbing, manufacturing
332919 Couplings, hose, metal (except fluid power), manufacturing
332919 3494 Elbows, pipe, metal (except made from purchased pipe),
manufacturing
332919 Flanges and flange unions, pipe, metal, manufacturing
332919 Hose couplings, metal (except fluid power), manufacturing
332919 Lawn hose nozzles and lawn sprinklers manufacturing
332919 Nozzles, fire fighting, manufacturing
332919 Nozzles, lawn hose, manufacturing
332919 Plumbing and heating inline valves (e.g., check, cutoffs,
stop) manufacturing
332919 Sprinklers, lawn, manufacturing
332919 Steam fittings, metal, manufacturing
332919 Unions, pipe, metal (except made from purchased pipe),
manufacturing
332919 Valves, inline plumbing and heating (e.g., cutoffs, stop),
manufacturing

I was curious why 332911 or 332912 would not be a better choice and
called the doctor back:

332911 is specific to valves. If you do not, or can not classify your
product as a valve, it is not appropriate.

332912 is specific to hydraulics, which does not seem to apply to your
company.

So, we confirmed, the best choice for you is, indeed, 332919.

Do let me know if you require additional research or clarification.

Best regards,

-=clouseau=-
