Question ID: 185905
I have heard a few times in the news that Saddam Hussein built not
only palaces for his sons, but also personal airports. What size are
these airports?
I'd wager they're not Heathrow or JFK size, but are they simply
landing strips or are they a little bit flashier?

http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/world/iraq/airfields.htm

Also, whilst scouring the darker corners of the web I found this
website http://216.239.51.100/search?q=cache:ziXZ50XZSrwC:www.machtres.com/irakx.htm+%22Al+Asad%22+runway&hl=en&ie=UTF-8
that contains satellite images of Iraqs airfields as well as tactical
pilotage charts for Iraq. As you can see it is only stored in the
Google cache memory and is no longer available, also you might notice
that the satellite images of the Iraqi airfields are from the CIA
website, strange that the link to the CIA web page is also not
working......

I realise this does not answer your question, but it might be of some
interest.

Best regards

To add to what has already been said, if you are referring to
airfields that are in Baghdad, and whether or not any of these are
named after or dedicated to his son's, this very detailed map reveals
none:

http://www.lib.utexas.edu/maps/middle_east_and_asia/baghdad_nima_2003.jpg

The airfields may well have been intended for his sons' use or built
specifically to insure that his sons (among others) had access to an
airfield out of necessity but none appear to be for their exclusive
use. It is possible I suppose that certain runways on these airfields
were set aside for the exclusive use of the dictatorship but we have
no way of knowing that for sure - at least not at the moment.

thx; Is the number after most of the airports the lenght in feet of
the longest runway? Any idea the meaning of the A1, Al, An, As, Ar,
Az prefixes?
