Dear adamani-ga:
Your question was not only very interesting but it also allowed me an
opportunity to do research on my PDA as well.
I note that you are right on track for one of the best PDA’s with
Bluetooth connectivity. My research has shown that the two PDA’s that
you mentioned are definitely top of the line. Clie PEG-TG50 is a
fairly new PDA therefore it has yet to receive any major accolades. As
for Palm Tungsten T, it has already made its mark among the best PDA’s
around (bonus with Bluetooth connectivity). Please review
http://www.pcworld.com/reviews/article/0,aid,108406,00.asp and
http://www.beststuff.com/articles/4817/ for Palm Tungsten T.
On the other hand, both of these PDA’s have been extensively reviewed.
After reading the reviews from the most authoritative sources, I
myself couldn’t really decide a winner as they both have great
features. My verdict is that it depends upon the user and the function
that he prefers that can decide a true winner.
Again, there are two types of reviews, expert advice and the ratings
by users of the device. I took both of these into account and still
couldn’t decide. For example, among others, I used PC Magazine, CNET,
ZDNET and my favorite InfoSyncWorld for both types of ratings. I will
provide you links to the exact web address but allow me to summarize
my findings.
Pros and Cons:
Clie PEG-TG50
Pros: Eye-catching design; fast processor; built-in mini keyboard;
integrated, hard flip cover; Bluetooth; MP3 support; generous software
package, Thumbboard, OS 5, MP3 support,
Cons: Somewhat hefty; limited onboard memory; Memory Stick a must for
certain multimedia features, Awful rocker, poor LED indicators.
Palm Tungsten T
Pros: Space-saving, convertible design; excellent screen; integrated
Bluetooth; fast processor; updated OS, Small elegant formfactor, D-Pad
and one-handed navigation
Cons: Can't access all functions when closed, Multimedia features
still limited, short-range IR.
As for the connectivity, I will go for the CLie PEG-TG50 as the
reviews have shown that its connection work flawlessly. Take for
example review from InfoSyncWorld which says, “As mentioned, the TG50
includes a Bluetooth radio. While the indicator lights are rather
annoying, the radio itself works flawlessly. We were able to pair the
TG50 with our desktop and Palm Tungsten T with no trouble, and then
sent a file over Bluetooth from the Tungsten T to the TG50 without a
problem.
The TG50's serial port is the now-standard T-series port, common to
most CLIEs. Also standard for Sony is a Memory Stick slot, which will
be compatible with the upcoming Memory Stick Pro cards, and a
headphone jack. It does not, however, include a set of earphones,
which is very unusual for Sony.” AND from ZD net “After consulting the
manual and enduring a little trial and error, we managed to get the
Bluetooth working. We set up the TG50 to communicate with other
devices via Bluetooth, and we shared text messages and pictures with
the Sony Ericsson P800 smart phone”.
On the other hand, reviews for Palm Tungsten T are good but not
flawless. Take for example, this article
http://zdnet.com.com/2100-1103-990506.html.
As for ease of use I will prefer Palm Tungsten T over CLie PEG-TG50.
After reading various reviews, I concluded that Clie PEG-TG50 is
sometimes annoying. Take for example a review by Info Sync World which
says, “The key spacing on the thumbboard is very good, and we were
able to type reasonably fast without any practice. The key travel,
however, is a bit short. Having the keys so close to the case also
makes it more difficult to tell one key from another. A few keys are
shifted around, such as Return being rather low and Backspace being on
the same row as the M key. There is only one shift key but a dedicated
Caps Lock key, whereas we'd prefer two shift keys. The Tab key inserts
a tab character rather than functioning as a "next form control"
button, as we would prefer, and four well-implemented directional
buttons. There is also a Ctrl button that only works on selected keys
to call up certain dialogs, such as Battery remaining, Media Info, and
Volume. On top of the device is the usual Memory Stick slot, Infrared
port, and headphone jack. There is also a large Bluetooth LED, as
large as the IR port, which flashes blue every two seconds when the
Bluetooth radio is enabled. The top-front of the device, facing the
user, also has a small flashing Bluetooth indicator, as well as the
power/charging LED, Recording LED, and microphone. We really don't
understand the need for the giant Bluetooth neon sign on the top, and
the constantly flashing light on the front is highly irritating.”
BESIDE this review you will find similar concerns by other reviewers.
Now come to the ease of migration from a Palm Vx with Groupwise
(enterprise e mail). Both of the PDA’s use highly competitive hardware
but I will slightly prefer Clie PEG-TG50 over Palm Tungsten T because
of the greater multimedia features of the Clie that may directly
interfere with
Groupwise (enterprise e mail). As far as the emailing and related
capabilities are concerned, both of them do a good job.
In conclusion, let me remind you that the superiority of these two
PDA’s depends upon the user.
