Folks:

Our URL (www.paratherm.com) cannot be found, and only two of our
website’s pages (below) appear to be indexed anywhere on Google.
Other than that, our name appears only in paid advertising -- and
where other sites reference us.

First Page:
Paratherm heat transfer fluids (thermal fluids, hot oils)
Paratherm Corporation Heat Transfer Fluids. Products. Paratherm
manufactures
non-fouling, non-toxic and sludge-resistant heat transfer ...
www.paratherm.com/products.htm - 10k - Apr 4, 2003 - Cached - Similar
pages

Second Page:
Heat Transfer Fluids, Hot Oils, Thermal Fluids.
Heat Transfer Fluids and Thermal Oils for
your process temperature control needs. ...
www.paratherm.com/ - 11k - Apr 4, 2003 - Cached - Similar pages

Near as I can remember, this began in October/November 2002.

We changed hosts several weeks ago and the above 2 pages came up. But
when www.paratherm.com is typed in Google’s search box, Google still
does not recognize it. And we have 60 to 70 pages other engines list
that Google doesn’t see.

About 53% of our existing and prospective customers in the process
industries use Google as their first search tool (Processing Magazine
survey), so this is extremely important to us.

Our tracking program, "Site Stats" indicates to us that no Google bots
have visited our site during the same period other sites using this
program have had visits. Our PageRank shows gray. And we’ve been
over an over our site and can’t find anything out of kilter.

I'm afraid I'm at a loss to understand why this is, and would hugely
appreciate if you guys would advise what we can do to have the bots
visit our URL so that Paratherm becomes listed again, our PageRank
goes green and our URL shows up.

Many thanks,

John

Dear SgtCory & robertskelton:

Thank you for weighing in on our situation.

Having read your thorough review and clarification of the *similar*
situation you have handled (assuming it was Question ID: 186836
Mysterious Google PageRank Zero), and done more research of our own,
we would request your opinion on the following issues;

First, I think the dissimilarities between 186836 and our situation
are significant. While the inquirer in 186836 had fallen to a zero
pagerank and subsequent loss of high listings, in our situation we now
have *no* pagerank (gray) and (only recently) a regaining of some
presence in listings on pertinent keyword searches on Google.

It appears to me that the 186836 situation is, in fact, not much of a
mystery.

So, we're showing up in searches, yet, we have no presence in the
Google database. Our pageRank is gray and searching Google for our
full url brings up the "Sorry, no information..." message. We're not
"listed," as they say. However, as robertskelton noted, it looks like
freshbot has indexed us, and recently at that, judging from the dates
included with our listings last week.

Interestingly, typing our company name (Paratherm) into Google web
search, and hitting enter, brings up many other pages that link to us,
of course. But at the very top of the listings is a directory
category (from DMOZ, I presume;)

"Category: Business > Industries > ... > Machinery and Tools >
Thermal Process"

Clicking this link brings up the following message within Google;

"The requested category Business > Industries > Manufacturing >
Machinery and Tools > Thermal Process could not be found. It is likely
that this category has been moved to another location within the
directory.
Suggested category:
Business."

Although that is, indeed similar to the DMOZ category where we are
found(Business: Industrial Goods and Services: Machinery and Tools:
Thermal Process.) In the interest of relevance and appropriateness,
we carefully selected our DMOZ category to be as specific as possible.

But do you think Google is trying to suggest that we change our
category?

Could this mismatch or disconnect somehow be the source of our
problems?

Should we attempt to change our category in DMOZ to Business;
Chemicals?

We'd appreciate if you'd have a second look, or let us know if all
this is a mystery to you as well.

My guess is that you are correct, a glitch in the Google Directory has
affected your site's place in the Google index.

I often find that directory categories have changed, but never before
considered it to cause any other problems.

If you try searching for "paratherm" within the category it is in,
Google doesn't find it:
http://directory.google.com/Top/Business/Industrial_Goods_and_Services/Machinery_and_Tools/Thermal_Process/

At the bottom of the cateogory are sites with no PageRank. Some of
these seem likely to be in the same situation as your site, having a
gray bar, despite not doing anything wrong.

American Heating Company
Roos Tempkool Ltd
Sylvania Heaters
Chromalox Precision Heat and Control

After looking into it deeper, I noticed that all the URLs listed for
all the above sites are re-directing to a new, different URL. To fix
their problems they need to tell DMOZ about the new URL.

Your current home page is index.asp - did it used to be different,
perhaps index.html?

Hello fingerpicker,

Most of your ASP pages are redirects to a closed members area. Google
picks up proper redirects, but *may* shy away from ones that are all
linked to the same page with different labeling throughout.

Most of your non ASP links are image pages. There is no content on
these pages that Google will index. (except maybe the image itself;-)

All together you only have a few static pages of content that are
available for the Googlebot to pick up.

Was there a point in time where you were in the index and had a much
higher PR?

Thanks for the clarification,
SgtCory

I'm usually pretty good at these types of questions, but I was
initially as puzzled as you are. The gray bar usually means that
Google hasn't indexed your site, and yet the two pages appear in
search results, which means they must have been indexed.

The date beside your listings indicates that it has been found by
Freshbot. Googlebot visits sites once a month, whereas Google's
Freshbot visits sites every few days, with the intention of only
visiting frequently updated pages. Sometimes it picks up regular sites
as well.

What should happen is that your entire site will appear with the next
major Google index update, possibly only a week away.

I haven't posted this as an answer because I cannot explain why you
weren't previously listed. I can only guess that when your site first
left the index (for wahtever reason), you neglected to resubmit the
URL to Google:

I agree with robertskelton on this one. I just answered a question for
another customer in a *similar* situation.

I would advise looking into the amount of topically related websites
that link to yours. Here is an excerpt from the Google help section:

Google Help
"If you increase the links pointing to the page, Google will likely
find your site in the future...."

Of course you wouldn't want just any links. You would want to maintain
a level of relation. This also serves to further increase your
PageRank.

Hope this helps!
SgtCory
