A book which had Artist in the title and an excerpt that was
something like We come into this world alone and we leave it alone,no
matter what arms may hold us, what lips.

I felt compelled to answer this question, if for no other reason than
your GA name! But the closest I can get is a rather famous Thomas de
Quincey quote, but from a book that doesn't have "Artist" in the
title:

Solitude, though it may be silent as light, is like light, the
mightiest of agencies; for solitude is essential to man. All men come
into this world alone; all leave it alone. -Thomas De Quincey, writer
(1785-1859)

Actually, it's probably this, but again, no "Artist" in the title:

"And left alone to sleep within a shuttered room, with the thick
sunlight printed in bars upon the floor, unfathomable loneliness and
sadness crept through him: he saw his life down the solemn vista of a
forest aisle, and he knew he would always be the sad one: caged in
that little round skull, imprisoned in that beating and most secret
heart, his life must always walk down lonely passages. Lost. He
understood that men were forever strangers to one another, that no one
ever comes really to know any one, that imprisoned in the dark womb of
our mother, we come to life without having seen her face, that we are
given to her arms a stranger, and that, caught in that insoluble
prison of being, we escape it never, no matter what arms may clasp us,
what mouth may kiss us, what heart may warm us. Never, never, never,
never, never."

Question answered. I was thinking it was from another book, but the
quote from Lookhomeward Angel was correct.

Glad to be of service; I've re-copied the quote below. Now...how is
it that our Google names are so similar....mere coincidence...?

"And left alone to sleep within a shuttered room, with the thick
sunlight printed in bars upon the floor, unfathomable loneliness and
sadness crept through him: he saw his life down the solemn vista of a
forest aisle, and he knew he would always be the sad one: caged in

It's just a coincidence that our names are similar. In fact I got
confused. This is the first time I used this service and just thought
they got my name spelled incorrectly.

Very fast indeed, despite the fact I was thinking of the wrong book. Thanks

No, It was Look Homeward Angel. I thought it was from another book I
had read, but it proved not to be. Thank you.
