Question ID: 186412
Windows XP Start Menu Question: I somehow set my programs menu to top
align (the default is bottom align). How do I undo this?
Illustration: I have ~ 30 items in the "Programs" bucket. Currently,
the first of these programs appears almost at the top of the screen,
the last, alongside the word "Programs". Note: I am using the
"Classic" skin.

I'm not sure I understand what your current configuration is, so I'll
post this as a clarification request.
Right-Click on "Start", go to Properties, Customize classic start
menu.
Now, I have the Spanish version, so I'm not sure what it says in
English. After you click customize you get a bunch of check-boxes
under "Advanced options of the Start Menu". Try what happens when you
check or uncheck the first of this boxes.
Did this do the trick?

Best wishes,
elmarto

Hi jonathane310,

From Help and Support (please read to the end because the article
addresses the Classic menu.

"To display a program at the top of the Start menu
Right-click the program you want to display at the top of the Start
menu.
You can right-click a program on the Start menu, in Windows Explorer,
in My Computer, or on the desktop.

Click Pin to Start menu.
The program is displayed in the pinned items list in the area above
the separator line on the Start menu.

Notes

You can remove the program from the pinned items list by
right-clicking the program and then clicking Unpin from Start menu.

You can change the order of the programs on the pinned items list by
dragging a program to a new position.

You cannot pin or unpin items using the Classic Start menu."

===========================

I'm using XP Home and have applied the Classic skin. I tested
"dragging" items from the Programs menu and that worked for me.

Please post a clarification if this helped you and I'll post it as the
answer.

Best Regards,

tlspiegel

Hi,
I'm kind of unclear on your question, so to be sure I've taken a
couple screen shots.
The first one has the start menu at the top of the screen:

This screenshot has the start menu in the default position:

Is yours stuck at the top of the screen and you want to know how to
move it back, or is it something else entirely? Please let me know.

I believe that he means that when he clicks on programs from the start
menu, the list appears, beginning at the top, then coming down about
half way, instead of having a side on the bottom of the screen. I've
never heard of this happening before, and have no idea how to fix it.

Hi jonathane310,

I had the same thing happen to me when too many programs got added to
my programs list. I don't know of a solution, or even if there is one,
but maybe try to remove a few icons, and see if the menu drops to the
bottom. At least than you will know if it something you did in
settings and can be undone, or if problem started after you had some
new items added to the menu, extending it to the point where windows
forces it to the top of the screen.
