Question ID: 186615
I'm looking to sell three domain names; premium-hosting.com,
premium-colocation.com, and premium-webhosting.com. I consider all
three domain names extremely valuable but would like to know how much
I should sell it for. Basically, what I'm looking for is an appraisal.
I'm also looking for tips as to how I can sell it effectively. So far
I've tried eBay auctions and greatdomains.com, but I am not looking
into spending much more money marketing them.

The answer I am looking for should be an educated answer, not an
opinion. Thanks!

Most domain names are not worth anywhere near as much as their owners
think they are. The bottom fell out of the name-reselling market quite
some time ago.

It is difficult to get used to the hard fact that a thing is "worth"
what someone is willing to pay for it. I do not mean to be insulting,
but if you're disappointed in the results from eBay, this probably
means that you had unreasonable expectations and have overestimated
the wonderfulness of these names.

It's my opinion that ebay simply isn't good for selling domain names.
I may be wrong, though.

Greetings, ryan!

As you are probably aware, in-depth "educated answers" on subjects
like these from consultants who really know the industry can cost
hundreds of dollars.

For the fee you are offering, Researchers might be able to offer you a
couple of tips. You might want to check out Google Answer's Pricing
Guide at

However, you might find the information posted on this Question to be
of interest (note that the Customer priced it more appropriately at
$200):

I'm not going to pay hundreds of dollars if the domains only end up
being worth a few hundred. I suppose I'm looking for an educated
opinion on someone who invests or buys, sells, and trades domain names
very frequently, and I'm looking for good ways to market it that is
cost efficient.

Howdy Ryan!

I think that 5 years of past ownership and operation of
an ISP, that included buying and selling domain names
and websites, etc. might make this an educated answer.

Unfortunately, chances are extremely against your domain
names having any value at all, for several reasons:

- The names are nothing special, that is, they aren't a
name such as (as an example) insurance.com.
- You don't own the .net, etc. versions of any of them,
which means anyone could (in the future) get/promote the
.net, etc. versions of them.
- The owners of (for instance) premiumhosting.com might
not be happy with anyone who really use the names (and
since that domain name was in use long before yours was
registered) and might just get a lawyer.
- Because there is a non-hypenated version of your domain
that is up and running, few people would want to promote
a site that will drive traffic to their competition.

My professional experience is that if the names are hot,
you will get offers without even trying. As an example,
I own a dozen or so "good" domain names, and one (and
only one) has had any (in the $100-$200 range) offers on
it, and that was without me trying or wanting to sell it.

If someone wanted to open a hosting company, they might
want your names, but they can come up with other names
that will work just fine (it took me about a minute to
come up with tiptop-hosting.com and tophat-hosting.com,
both of which are both available) for them.

Now, if you had a site running under the name (and didn't
get a letter from someone's attorney) maybe you could get
enough traffic to go to the owners of the non-hypenated
version and try to sell it to them.

At least put web sites up under the domain names that show
your intent is to sell the domain names.

If you do want to pursue an appraisal, etc. you might check:

...
$19.95 ea. for 1-5 domain names

Looking Forward, denco
