Hello javyk-ga,

At the outset, I should emphasize the disclaimer at the bottom of this
page, which explains that answers on Google Answers are not
substitutes for professional medical advice.

The following pages from two health-care organizations state that
betel leaf (sometimes called "beetle leaf") itself does not appear to
be hazardous to health, but that supari (areca nut) is hazardous to
health.

"Tobacco and Oral Cancer"
ApolloLife
http://channels.apollolife.com/show.asp?NewAid=9491

"Mouth Cancer Week Briefing Sheet"
Asian Quitline
http://www.asianquitline.org/images/resources/mouth.doc

I hope that this information is helpful.

[I also tried searches with other terms, such as "beetle leaf" and
"pan", before finding success with the searches I have mentioned.]

Hello, jayvk,

I'm posting this a comment because I couldn't find a sufficient answer
about the beetle leaf and very little about supari.

However, from what I've just read, I wouldn't touch supari with a 10
foot pole. From a Google page cache of an expired web page, I learned
that reports have shown that supari is linked to cancer and that it is
addictive due to the fact that testing has found incidents of heroin
content.

"...disease oral sub mucous fibrosis which is being linked
increasingly with the consumption of supari..."

"as many as 29, out of 36 - both of Indian and Pakistani origin - have
been shown to have diacetyl morphine (heroin) when analysed by the
department of chemistry, University of Karachi."
