How do I find information about old solved crimes that happened in the
mid 1980s in North Carolina and Virginia without actually having to
visit those states?

It's possible to conduct on-line searches of old newspapers, some of
which go as far back as the 1970's.  Depending on the "noteriety" of
the crimes they may appear in national newspapers, or you may have to
contact very local news sources.  Many sources, though, first began
electronic archives in the mid to late 1980's, so a lot depends on
when the crimes in question actually took place.

Are you looking for information about how to conduct such an on-line
newspaper search?  Or are you expecting other sources?
