Hello elanor,

I believe that I have found the quote that you were looking for:

"He really cared for the higher good of all people. He was a
reincarnated American Indian. That's what a hippie is: a rainbow
warrior. And in my heart and in his heart, he had the best intentions
for all people. I'm sure he's standing in the light that has no
shadows, you know. He's awake... And we're still dreaming.”

The above quote was by Carlos Santana, a native born in Mexico. While
not an actual Aboriginal leader, it was the closest quote that I could
find that matched you paraphrase. I have a collection of other
information that might be useful for you, or that might help us narrow
this down even more:

Other interesting quotes from the page that led me to the above quote:
“Spiritual leaders like Mad Bear Anderson (Tuscarora) and Rolling
Thunder (Cherokee) taught that the time would come when the Rainbow
Warriors (hippies and counterculture adherents) would grow interested
in tribal culture and propagate the old ways of respect for the Earth
and all living things. The American Indian Movement was founded.” (I
did look for the specific quotes from the leaders, but was not able to
find them in the context you were looking for)

“The hippies who embraced Native American teachings, and preached a
gospel of peace and love were part of the "awakening" or "Seventh
Fire," according to Vernon Harper, a Northern Cree elder, medicine man
and spiritual leader. Harper believes the Seventh Fire occurred in the
1960s because Cree prophecies said that it would be "a time when the
Rainbow People and the People of Color would appear and be like
children." He believes these people were the hippies.”

“Carlos Santana echoed this idea when he eulogized Jerry Garcia,
saying, "Jerry really cared for the higher good of all people. He was
a reincarnated American Indian. That's what a hippie is: a rainbow
warrior." Hippies and New Agers who respect and want to learn from
Native American teachings may be part of the "large population" that
represent the return of Pahana, say some.”

“Sun Bear spoke of an old Hopi prophecy that foretold a time when
Native American teachings would be forgotten even by most Indians. But
after about a hundred years, Native American religions would revive
and many would seek its knowledge, including "the people who had come
from across the Great Waters, their sons and daughters... would say to
us, `Teach us, because we have almost destroyed the earth.'"”

Other (possibly) interesting links:

Scroll down to where it says “Warrior of the Rainbow” here:
http://www.powersource.com/ebt/stone.html (Although it does not talk
about hippies directly, one could easily make the connection.)

Here is another link that might be interesting to you:
http://www.welcomehome.org/rainbow/prophecy/prophecies.html (You can
read about the native prophecy that some believe was
fulfilled/partially fulfilled with the hippies).

I hope that the answer was what you were expecting. Please let me know
if you require further clarification regarding this answer. I will do
my best to further assist you.
