I found a couple generic laxatives in pill and chocolate forms which
are cheap and can be bought online from CVS.com. Although I've not
personally used either, my family uses the pills on occasion. They
follow below and do not include any calcium sulfate which you say
irratates your wife's stomach.

CVS Stool Softener Capsules Plus Stimulant Laxative:

CVS Chocolate Laxative Pieces:

On top of these two remedies, there are many non-generic name-brand
laxatives as well as fiber pills which are like Metamucil only in pill
form.

Mannitol is frequently prescribed as a purgative prior to radiological
examination of the GI tract. It is certainly effective. It is a
simple sugar and is non-toxic. I'm not sure in what form it is
available to the public, but it is usually just a flavoured powder
that is dissolved in water.

Check with your pharmacist, and, of course, with your doctor.
