This is a very subjective question...I am looking for a list of songs
that are appropriate for a wedding. I am trying to avoid getting the
"staple" songs, and am looking for something a little more "B Side",
yet not obscure. Recognizable, but not necessarily one people would
expect. I am expecting an 8 piece band, which specialized in soul and
funk, but they have considerable range. I would like choices from
different categories, Rat Pack, soul, do-wop, more contemporary, etc.
I am also looking for a good "first dance" song, which may be fairly
current. Again, something that wouldn't come to mind right away,
possibly, but still an appropriate choice. We are two 25 year olds
getting married, that currently enjoy Clapton, Dave Matthews, Sublime,
Earth Wind and Fire, Eminem and Blues Traveler, to give you a hint at
our tastes. I hope this is not too vague, but I am happy to
clarify...Thanks in advance.

Here are a few of my own personal favorites. It's not easy to pick
songs for someone without knowing them well, but these are songs that
I think would be suitable for just about any wedding.

It may be a little bit sappy, but I think John Denver's "Follow Me"
would make a great "first dance" song:

"...You see I'd like to share my life with you,
Show you things I've seen,
Places that I'm going to, places where I've been,
To have you there beside me, and never be alone,
All the time that you're with me, we will be at home.

Follow me where I go,
What I do and who I know,
Make it part of you to be a part of me.
Follow me up and down, all the way.
Take my hand and I will follow you."

"They Were You" is a little-known song from the off-Broadway musical
"The Fantasticks." This is a waltz-tempo tune with elegant lyrics:

"...Every secret prayer, every fancy-free,
Everything I dreamed for both you and me.
All my wildest dreams, multiplied by two,
They were you, they were you, they were you.

When the moon was young, when the month was May,
When the stage was hung for my holiday,
I saw shining lights, but I never knew,
They were you, they were you, they were you..."

Dan Fogelberg's "Longer" is a lovely song for a wedding:

"...Stronger than any mountain cathedral
Truer than any tree ever grew
Deeper than any forest primeval
I am in love with you
I'll bring fire in the winters
You'll send showers in the spring
We'll fly through the falls and summers
With love on our wings

Through the years as the fire starts to mellow
Blurring lines in the book of our lives
Though the binding's cracked and the pages start to yellow
I'll be in love with you..."

Bob Dylan's "Make Me Feel Your Love" isn't your typical wedding fare,
but it's a powerful song:

"When the rain is blowing in your face
And the whole world is on your case
I could offer you a warm embrace
To make you feel my love

When the evening shadows and the stars appear
And there is no one there to dry your tears
I could hold you for a million years
To make you feel my love..."

It's hard to resist the simplicity of "Don't Know Much," as sung by
Linda Ronstadt and Aaron Neville:

"So many questions
Still left unanswered
So much I've never broken through
And when I feel you near me
Sometimes I see so clearly
The only truth I've ever known
Is me and you...
I don't know much
But I know I love you
And that may be all I need to know"

If you like a little Latin lilt to your music, Carlos Santana's "Say
It Again" is lively and sweet:

"...It gives me such a thrill
When you tell me 'bout the way you feel
It really makes my day
I just love to hear you say

Say it again, say it high say it low
Say it again, so the whole wide world will know
Say it, that you're still lovin' me
Still lovin' me, still in love with me
Say it again, tell me where, tell me when

Say it again, that our love will never end
Say it, that you're still lovin' me
Still lovin' me, still in love with me..."

I could go on and on and on. I have a head full of fifty years' worth
of music. If any of these songs "ring your chimes," I'd be glad to
suggest some more.

Oooh, I have to second Pinky's suggestion of John Denver's "Follow
Me." I hope to use it at my wedding some day! Another good one is
"Annie's Other Song," more often recognized as "Bringing Me Home to
You." This is expecially good for couples who may have at some point
been long distance from each other, even though it may be a little
upbeat for a traditional first dance.

The first few lines:
I'm bringing me home to you,
It's all that I have to give
My life, my love, my everything,
It's you I choose to be with

I'll let this bounce around in my head for a bit, and come back if I
think of anything else.

Congratulations!

If you're a Dave Matthews fan, "Crush" is a wonderful wedding song.

Soul-ier, eh?

How about Diana Ross & Lionel Ritchie's "Endless Love"?

"...Two hearts, two hearts that beat as one.
Our lives have just begun.
Forever, I'll hold you close in my arms,
I can't resist your charm.
My love, I'll be a fool, for you I'm sure,
You know I don't mind.
Cause you, you mean the world to me.
Oh, I know I've found in you, my endless love..."

Alright - another Clapton fan. Right up my alley ;-)

Let's see ....... If you don't mind something 'country-ish' for the dance -

- Something That We Do (Clint Black)

"I remember well the day we wed,
I can see that picture in my head -
I still believe the words we said,
- forever will ring true"

It's holding tight, letting go,
flying high, and laying low..."

If you get the chance to listen to this one, I'm positive you'll love it.

There are some gorgeous bluesy versions of Summertime.

Summertime, and the living is easy...etc.

Jazz Tunes I have played at weddings with great success include
"My One and Only Love" by Robert Mellin and Guy Wood
(hear it at http://www.geocities.com/hablandopajapuntocom/myone.html )
"My Romance" by Richard Rodgers & Lorenz Hart
"Someone To Watch Over Me" by the Gershwin brothers.

there is a classic version of "my one and only love" by Johnny Hartman
and John Coltrane, and great renditions of "someone to watch over me"
by Ella Fitzgerald and Frank Sinatra, there are too many recordings of
"My Romance" to even mention!
