i'd like autobiographical accounts if possible of what it was like to work as a reporter during ww11 in a radio station in a mid-size city. types of microphones, bosses, covering beats, censorship, local celebrity--anything that would add some depth and color to a piece of fiction writtem about that era.a |

It's not a "mid-size" city, but my mother worked at WOR Radio in Manhattan back then. In fact, she and my father were married on December 7th, 1941! They were so busy that day they hadn't heard about the bombing of Pearl Harbor. When they arrived at the temple in New Rochelle, they found many of the guests sitting in their cars, weeping. They couldn't figure out why anyone would be so emtoional about their wedding. Then, of course, they heard the news, but went ahead with the wedding anyway. Right after the ceremony my mother handed trays of hors d'ouvres to her WOR colleagues, who loaded them up in their cars and drove back to Manhattan and back to non-stop live broadcasting. They lived on those platters for the whole weekend. |
