My portable PC running windows NT started operating extremely slowly,
for example taking more than 3 minutes to open a simple MS Word file.
According to the Windows NT Task Manager, a program called
"daemon.exe" is consuming 100% of the CPU. I am unable to delete the
programme using the "end process" function. Only by revising the
priority of the programme to "low" am I able to get any work done.

I have no idea where the daemon executable came from (my virus checker did
not detect it as a problem).

Question: How can I get rid of this programme.

Hello hopone,

I did a bit of research on this and it is hard to track down what is
actually running on your system.

Can you locate daemon.exe using the find function of your machine,
then right click and look at details to find the vendor, version and
any other information that might be helpful in locating the fix for
you? If you need further instruction to do this, please ask.

In the mean time, I have located the following that *could* be the
program you have running:

http://www.silverplume.com/support/software/SPWeb.htm

SilverPlume Web is a Windows NT server application, comprised of three
major components which run on the server:

The daemon.exe is a larger program which is loaded once and remains in
memory. The daemon constantly monitors the queue for processing
requests. When a request appears, the daemon processes the request
(utilizing spserv32.dll) and returns an appropriate HTML page as an
output entry in the queue.

http://www.daemon-tools.org/main.htm

DAEMON Tools is an advanced application for multiprotection emulation.
It is further development of Generic Safedisc emulator and
incorporates all its features. This program allows running BACKUP
copies of SafeDisc (C-Dilla), Securom or Laserlock protected games.
Also included is a Virtual DVDROM drive (Generic DVDROM) enabling you
to use your CD images as if they were already burned to CD! DAEMON
Tools works under Windows9x/ME/NT/2000/XP with all types of CD/DVDROM
drives (IDE/SCSI) and supports nearly any CD protection.

DAEMON Tools needs a 1:1 copy to run!!

DAEMON Tools is used to RUN GAMES, NOT TO BURN THEM!!! Means emulation
must be active while you want to play a game, not while burning the
copy (except for you want to use DAEMON Tools' "fastdump" feature on a
safedisc protected CD).

This program:
TrackPointSrv -- Mouse fast scrolling

Also calls a daemon.exe for laptops.

TrackpointSrv daemon.exe tp4serv.exe

Supports the "pointer stick" on Thinkpads in lieu of a mouse on an IBM
ThinkPad laptop. Necessary for the "scroll" button to work.

Is your laptop an IBM?

Let me know what you find via Request for Clarification and I may be
able to help further.

The only daemon.exe located by the Find function is in folder
winnt\system32, an 84Kb applicaiton authoered on 19/04/99. Right click
does not reveal other information. The laptop contains only the
company standard applicaitons (Microsoft Office, Email client, MS
Project, Internet Explorer, Acrobat reader). No trace of anythin like
"Silverplume Web".

And if you right click this daemon.exe and select properties there is
no other information of value?

No; right clicking merely reveals the creation date as listed in the file details.
