Hello alonzo1,

It took a while to settle in, but in Decemeber of 2002, the city
adopted the 1999 N.E.C. (National Electrical Code)

You will need Adobe Acrobat to read the following files. You can
download it for free here:

Adobe Acrobat
http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html

Do to copyright restrictions, I can only copy a small excerpt here :

NYC New Electrical Code for Low Voltage Installers
"An individual who has been determined by the commissioner to be
competent to perform low voltage electrical work in compliance with
the electrical code and the electrical code technical standards, the
building code and other applicable law and who otherwise qualifies in
accordance with this section and the rules of the department may be
certified as a low voltage installer..."
http://www.nyc.gov/html/dob/pdf/elcode3.pdf (pages 28 and 29)

To obtain this certification you would need to contact a
representative from the Building Code section of NYC. You will then be
able to find out about the exam, to include pricing. This information
is not available on the their website as of yet. (That I can find)

I took the liberty of calling the Building Division, and in typical NY
fashion, my first phone call was a hang up ;-) My second phone call, I
was told there was no licensing for this area. I am certain that it
exists, you may just have to talk to a few people that understand the
new system.

So I can not offer this as a fully qualified answer, but thought it
may lead you in the right direction, so I'll leave it as a comment.

Department of Buildings’ Licensing Division at (212) 566-4100

I hope it helps,

SgtCory
